What to Pay Babysitter? - Madison,WI

We have a 17-year old babysitter who comes 3 times a week for 1.5 hours. In the past we have paid her $5/hour to watch our toddler. After Thanksgiving she will watch our toddler (almost 3) and our infant (will be 4 weeks). We are not sure how much to pay her now that we will have two children. Suggestions? Thank you for your help.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the many fast responses! Seems everyone agrees on $10/hour. One thing I forgot to point out is that I am in the home while she is babysitting as I am self-employed and this 1.5 hours is my kid-free working time. We definitely throw bonuses her way (thank you gifts, holiday gifts, time off, etc.) as we think she is fantastic with our daughter. She is excited for two! Thanks again for all of the help.

Double. We pay $15 for three. Infants are a lot of work. and an active toddler. I know expensive but we all get what we pay for. Don't cut corners LOL :)

I'd suggest double. If you trust her with your kids, and she's good with them, and if your toddler adores her, she's more than worth it.

A 17-year-old could get a job elsewhere, so I'd pay her minimum wage at the least. For two I'd do $10 an hour. If you really like her and trust her, pay a little extra so she'll continue to do the work for you.

I can't believe she worked for only five dollars per hour!!! With the new baby and toddler, I'd pay her at least 10 - 12 dollars an hour. If you trust her, she's worth it.

I would pay her at least $10 an hour. An infant and toddler is a lot of work for a 17 year old girl so I would throw her a little $20 bonus here and there if you can afford it. Congrats on your new addition :)

Yes, at least $10/hr. $5 isn't even minimum wage.

you were lucky to pay her less than minimum wage for one child. at least $10 to an hour.

If you are home then at least minimum wage. ;)

I would ask her what she charges for the ages you have. She may go cheap since she has been with you for a while, so I would go a tad hirer than what she says and touch base with her every month and every 3 months give her a small raise. She will be so happy. I also give my sitter a christmas bonus and a week vacation of her picking. This is if my check is not affected (I take vacation the week she wants off so I get vacation pay)

For 2 kids my sitter only charges 5, but since that was her before rate I would add half of it, for $7.50 per hour.

You could go hourly or weekly. Right now you are essentially paying her $22.50 per week. Considering the repsonsibility of an infant, you could do $10 hour ($45 for the week) or just make it $50 for the week as a base rate and be thankful that you have someone so responsible and so reasonable!

We pay our sitter for one really easy toddler $8-$10 per hour depending on how we "round it" when we get home!
