What to Feed Tooth-Challenged Baby

I need a litle insight here -- please only respond if you too have a toothless baby and thus have direct experience:

My 1 year old is basically toothless (has 2 teeth front botton that he doesnt use) and for the most part, still eats pureed foods thickened with rice cereal and stage 3 jars). He can gum successfully a slice of bread with cheese and scrambled eggs as well as steamed fruits but that's about it. If I give him steamed veggies, they don't seem to mash too well -- he either spits them out or I see them in their whole form in his poop. One time he had mac and chees but then he threw up that night -- not sure if that's related. Anyway, he's going to be weaning off of his formula soon so I want him to eat more foods but does this mean he's not ready for things such as pasta, steamed veggies, etc. or is this normal? I need to know whether to keep making pureed foods or if I shoudl graduate to making him more real food. **EDIT** What about meats? and rice? Does he still need rice cereal or can he eat real rice now?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

My son didn't have ANY teeth until well after his first birthday. I fed him: overcooked pasta, veggies that were steamed until they were completely lifeless and cut into small pieces (or sometimes blended), cubed cheese (small pieces) , scrambled eggs, microscopic pieces of chicken... Really anything squishy that he could mash with his gums and/or tongue and lots of stuff cut into tiny little pieces. He was eating primarily what we ate only cut up and/or overcooked. (Mine didn't like the mesh feeders, bummer.)

I would graduate him on.........his gums will adapt.......when people get their teeth pulled and get dentures they have to go through the same thing, but they never get their teeth back................He'll figure out what he can and can't eat......as well as what he likes.

Just don't give him anything super hard to chew for a while......let him build up for it.........hot dogs are pretty easy to chew in small pieces as well.

Good Luck!

I had a 1 year old with only 2 teeth and she would everything I would eat just cut up smaller. At 10 months old she was eating crock pot tri-tip, pastas, cheeses, crackers etc.. and she had no teeth. They use their gums to mash food since most don't get molars until 18 months or so. I would try to get him off of baby food and onto real food as soon as possible. Just try things that have some flavor to them and he may be more likely to eat them.

My girl also only had the 2 little bottom teeth at 1 year old (and didn't get more until 16 months). By that time, she was weaned from the bottle and breast and was eating almost everything that I ate. I still gave her at least 1 jar/bowl of "fortified" baby food, but otherwise, just let her try whatever. I would just avoid lots of sugar, salt, or strong spices (for a little while longer anyways). She's 1 1/2 and I still see some "whole" veggies in her poop (especially corn and green beans)--I don't worry about it. She gets well-rounded meals and mostly-healthy snacks and her weight and growth are right on track. I also read somewhere that sometime between 18 months and 2 years, babies will start to reject new foods. So, the window from 1 year to 18/24 months is our best opportunity to introduce as many different types, flavors, textures of food as we can! I say that you just put different things in front of him and let him figure out what he can/can't eat and what he likes/doesn't like. If you really feel like he's not eating enough (feeding himself), you can feed him that jar/bowl of babyfood at the end of the meal.

Good luck! This part is so much fun--I love giving my girl new foods to try!!

I would buy the mesh suckers at the store. You can put whatever you want in it, close it up and he can naw on it and get little pieces out. Good Luck

I would move him on as well.
Try draining a can of soup for the veggies/meats. They're super squishy and you can get a good amount of variety in there.

Pasta should be fine, as long as it's well cooked.

gums are as strong as teeth, have you ever been gummed by a baby, it hurts, lol........my 4 kids all got their 1st tooth at 13 months but they were off of pureed foods by 10 months......at 10 months they ate all table food that i made for my husband & i........everything is just smaller & softer.......you don't need to make him his own food anymore he just needs to get used to the foods you eat......maybe you are not steaming your veggies long enough, pampered chef has an awesome steaming container that goes right into the microwave, even though my kids are older this thing is my best friend still, you can make veggies as soft or tender as you desire or use it to just heat up food.........beef is a little harder for kids to chew so make sure that its very tender & juicy like a pot roast & pour the juices over it.....same thing with chicken just make sure its tender & not dry, you can even boil chicken, thats right just through chicken in a pot of water & let it boil (like a hot dog)......your son can also eat ham & cheese sandwiches cut up into little tiny squares that he can pick up with his fingers......make him some elbow pasta or rice mixed with peas & chicken & put a little butter & parmesan cheese..........make carrots super tender & cut up very small, my kids loved black beans cold or warm........at 1 yr my kids loved meatloaf, enchiladas, beef stew, chicken & rice soup, stuffing, chicken with pesto sauce, cheese tortellini with alfredo sauce.....well hope i gave you some ideas

I would graduate him to more really food. My best friends son only had 4 teeth at age 1 and he gummed everything. Try and keep most of the food soft and small. My 10 month old has 4 teeth (doesnt use them) and has been on straight table food for a while now.

All I can say is just try foods, stay away from salty and spicy foods.
