What to Do with Outgrown Clothes?

What do you all do with your children's outgrown clothes? I took some to Once Upon a Child, but they didn't pick many. I'm not sure what they are looking for, maybe the wrong clothes for the season. I have 2 daughters and they have both worn the clothes. I don't plan to have any more children so I don't need to keep them anymore. I don't know anyone who could use the clothes. Which places do you like to donate clothes to? I've heard some places sell the clothes in stores, but I'm not sure who is benefitting from the money they make. I'd also be interested in trading them for clothes for my one year old son, but I don't know how to find people. Is there a website like that?

What can I do next?

I donate them to GRACE in Grapevine, the Leukemia Society and the Paralyzed veterans. Usually I just have a bag waiting and the first chrity to call and offer to pick them up gets them. I have found that gargage sales and resale shops are too much trouble for the amount of money involved.

There are three consignment sales in the area about to happen.

www.jbfsale.com/mckinney Just Between Friends is having one April 20th-21st at High Pointe Church of Christ (BIG SALE)

www.carouselconsign.com Carousel Childrens Consignment is having one Apr 26th-28th (MEDIUM SALE)

www.threesistersconsignments.com Three Sisters Consignment sale is having theirs in Frisco Apr.24th-25th (SMALL SALE)

I Hope that helps. All of these have various rules on prep and tagging but they will take anything as long as it is in good condition, not stained, etc. You can put it to be donated after the end of the sale on the tags.

If you don't want to mess with prepping stuff then taking to any goodwill or any charity (some churches take clothes too) would be just fine.

I'm guessing that the clothes your wanting to get ride of arn't anything you'd want to hold on to for a keepsake, but if there are any favorites you could do one of these things. I have a friend who took her son's favorites clothes and made a sweet quilt out of them. And then I have another friend who's mom kept just a few of her baby clothes in a small trunk (things without elastic since that doesn't age well) and now my friend has dressed her son in those clothes that she wore when she was a baby! My mom didn't keep any of my clothes, but I wish she would have because I think it is so sweet that my friends baby is wearing the same clothes she wore when she was a baby! They were simple things that are kind of timeless & classic, like a red pair of overalls, white baby booties, a crocheted hat, things like that. They are adorable and vintage!

If you are looking to trade or sell your clothes, you could advertise for free on Craigslist. I am having my third son due in July (was unexpected) and had sold everything at least a year ago. I am finding everything for much less on Craigslist.

Good luck!

E., I have been wondering why someone doesn't start a group that trades clothes. I tried selling my son's 12-18 month outfits, many were brand new with price tags, and didn't get much from the resale shop. I had a garage sale and tried selling them for $3-$5 with the tags showing they were worth much more and still nobody wanted to buy them. I would love to find some other Moms that want to start a clothes exchange group.

Unfortunately, I've given away most of my son's clothes from that age range (given most to CCA, Community Christian Action, in Lewisville), but would be happy to hang on to whatever I still have and give those to you or someone who could use them. I also have a daughter who is 5 so I would be interested in getting clothes that would fit her to help me save some money, too.

My e-mail is ____@____.com if you would like to discuss this further. Thanks for bringing this up and hope to hear from you. L.

We donate our clothes to either Second Glance or the CCA. Second Glance sells the clothes to help abused women and children. CCA sells them to help raise money for various projects (houses, etc) for those in need. As for trading you can post here or on craigslist and see what you get.

You can try listing them on www.craigslist.com. You can try to sell them or just give them away to a needy family. Listings on craigslist is free. We buy and sell things on there a lot. Also, you Ebay them or just take them to the Salvation Army. Good luck!

There are several consignment sales that happen in the area that will allow you to try to sell just about anything. One is http://www.divineconsign.net/ I'm sure you could find others around. Sellers at those sales also get first chance to shop, so you could sell your daughter's clothes and get some great deals for clothes for your son. Other than that, there is always craigslist. I've had great luck there lately. Or perhaps just join a moms group and offer to trade or sell or even give them to people in your group. It would also be a good way to help your son make friends. My 1 year old seems to really love our moms group. If you want to donate them to a worthy cause, there are plenty of shelters that I am sure could use them.

My suggestion would be Interfaith Transitional Housing in Dallas. This is a spectacular faith-based organization that is run on completely on donations!!! Contact Jackie at ____@____.com or ###-###-####.
The organization take homeless families off of the street (most of the families that I know of have children). They have strict rules for being in the program: willing to education and training for a job (they provide this), attending counseling, money-management, etc... They provide the families with a furnished apartment, toys, clothes, everything, until they are able to get back on their feet again. I have volunteered there, and have since started donating everything that I don't need there. They take furniture, dishes, clothes, toys, EVERYTHING!!!
I was impressed at what this organization does for the community and it is reassuring that if we ever find ourselves in this situation, I know that we could rely on them. Can't say enough good things about them!!! Also, keep in mind that they do not sell anything. Several times a month, everything that is donated is set out for the families in a "garage-sale" setting. However, they get to browse and pick things for their families and children (but do not have to pay for it). They get it directly, but get to choose for themselves what they would like!!!
