What to Do About Yeast Infection in an 8 Week Old?

My 8 week old son has had an yeast infection since he was born., The doctor prescribe Nystatin which helps temporarily with the diaper rash but it keeps on coming back. My son's tong is coated in a white coating. The Nystatin drops don't seem to help. I don't think we have a case of me giving him the infection and him doing the same to me because my nipple are not chapped or sore.
Can someone please recommend a way to get rid of this?
Thanks

When my son had a yeast infection at 4 weeks our doctor prescribed the same ointment. We used that as prescribed and we made sure to fully swab him up with A&D ointment (or Desitin, whichever your preference). That seemed to help. Yeast grows in damp conditions so I suggest changing his diaper frequently and keep loading up his entire diaper area with the ointments. Hope this helps and your little man gets well soon.

FOOD ALLERGY ALERT!! That's what it sounds like to me. Is it formula? Or something that you are eating that goes in your milk? The only way to deal with this would be to find the source of the issue. Yeast infections just don't happen. As a nursing mom, I had to cut down on 'white food' which helped. Then I discovered, through a daily food journal and trial and error, that tomatoes and lactose were the main culprits. Once I cut out tomatoes and dairy/lactose (butter is okay), I was able to eat any kind of bread with butter of course with no more infections. Good luck.

Hi R.,
My son also had thrush when he was a baby and the nystatin did not work. I saw a lot of advice for "purple stuff". I don't know what that is but I used acidophiles. It is the bacteria found in yogurt that kills yeast infection. You can get it in the organic section in the refrigerator at the supermarket, or you can get in tablet form in the vitamin aisle and just crush it up and put it around your baby's mouth and tongue. The yeast infection will disappear like magic. (I used it in tablet form because I couldn't find it in liquid form at the time...8 years ago)

If he has it and your breastfeeding, then so do you. My nipples never got dry or cracked or hurt when my son had it. I had no symptoms at all actually, but we kept passing it back and forth for it seemed like 6 wks. And if you have it (which is most likely the case) you are just going to keep passing it back and forth. I use to rub the nystatin oral solution on my nipples once I was done nursing and leave my bra open so that they could air dry. My pediatrician said that wouldn't work, but it did. It does take a while to get rid of it. Much longer then they tell you it will. But keep giving him the nystantin and using the cream on his butt. Because if it's in his mouth and on his butt, it's running his whole digestive tract.

if his tongue is coated white it's thrush, which is a yeast infection. which means he keeps giving it back to you and you to him. your nipples don't have to be chapped or sore.

i would suggest going to whole foods and finding out what you can do about it.

Hi R.,
If it's on his tongue, it certainly could be thrush and you may need to be treated as well. I would suggest contacting your OB or Midwife to let them know what's going on. If the pediatrician isn't helping and the yeast is systemic/not just in the diaper area, I would look for a second opinion.
Good luck

Oh, R., how I feel for your son. I agree with the mothers here, you are passing it back and forth whether you are experiencing it pain or not. I felt the pain and soreness, but never creacked open as some mothers have told me about. I don't remember too much what I did for my second son. I remember putting something on the Q-tip and rub it on the inside of his mouth and putting some on me and may have been purple, can't remember. If the pediatrician isn't doing anything, contact your OB midwife and see what they suggest for you to use while nursing. Sorry I can't remember too much what the name was or anything. I just remember that I was soooo sore and it hurt and burned while he nursed and I didn't not enjoy nursing as I did with my third because I had other problems after the thrush and yeast infection healed up. And he is the closest to me, too.

ask your doctor for a sample of Vusion. It worked for my daughter who had it for 3 months before 1 pediatrician gave me this.

My midwife gave me gentian violet to clear up thrush--it's very messy-- you paint it on your nipples and then it coats the babies mouth when they nurse--turning everything a messy purple color, but it does seem to work--it's a very common treatment at least in Eugene, OR where we lived--you frequently saw little purple lipped babies! Good luck.

Use the purple stuff. I think it's called Gentin Violet.. ask a pharmacist.. it's really purple.. and messy.. but it really works. My son had the white stuff for months.. like 4 months.. and the meds from the dr. just didn't work.. so i tried the purple stuff.. you put a little on a q-tip and rub around his mouth and put some on your nipple.. let dry.. it stains so be careful.. the babies mouth will be purple.. use once a day for 2 weeks.. it will be gone.. ask the pharmacy... it really is the best..

Hi R.,
the purple stuff is called ventian violet, and it does work, put it on your nipples too, and for the diaper rash use caldesene powder its in a pink bottle it works great. make sure that everytime you nurse your baby gently wipe his tongue afterwards. Make sure you are getting enough rest and eating more fruits and vegetables.God Bless you and your little one.
