I am a stay at home mom and someone recently approached me about watching their baby when their maternity leave is over. I am considering taking the opportunity, but I have no idea what to ask for payment. Can anyone share what they pay their sitters that watch your kids out of their homes? Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

I would call around to daycare centers in your area and ask them what they charge per day for an infant. Once I have that info I would probably go a little lower on the price because it is someone I know. You will also want to check your state regulations if you are watching the baby at your house. I know in Kansas you have to at least get registered to watch a child in your home on a regular basis.

Hi D.,

When I was looking for a care giver for my son about 2 years ago, I did my research and home daycares in my area charge between 85-150 per week. This is in Virginia so I don't know what will that be in NJ. The easiest thing is to look for home daycares in your aread and see what they charge.
Good luck!!

Well, are you babysitting or providing full time child care? There is a difference. As a previous poster pointed out, you might need to be registered with your state to watch a child full time in your home.
Otherwise, you could look on craigslist for home care providers and see what the average weekly rate for an infant is. If you are only babysitting for an hour or so a day, then I'd go with an hourly rate.

I have done in-home childcare for 6 years. I charge $200 a week and I have 1 week of paid vacation each year. My suggestion if you go ahead is to make sure you set certain rules: i.e. being paid on Monday or Friday, hours of operation, being paid for holidays. It is better to think it out before hand and set down the rules than to be taken advantage of.

$15-20/hour for one child. You may have to charge less since it won't only be that child you are watching and you won't be able to give the baby your undivided attention. hope this helps. This is what many pay in Philadelphia.
