I was told not to put a lot of money into one for this age b/c they are going to wet it and possibly jump on it when you aren't looking. We just bought the cheapest one we could find at an outlet.
My 3 year old son currently sleeps in his crib with the front part off. The crib turns into a double bed (not a twin). We are looking at putting him into his "big boy" bed soon, but I don't know what type (firm or soft) of mattress to buy? Does anyone have any advice on how to shop for a double/full size mattress for my toddler? Also, any recommended brands would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Stef,
Toys-R-Us carries a nice Sealy.
Take Care.
My son loves his posturepedic mattress! It's thick just like our queen size and very comfortable. I don't remember the brand but we bought it at Target.com - They don't carry but a few mattresses in their actual store here.
I agree on making sure you find a waterproof mattress cover as well. It will save you from great expense down the road...as far as brand of mattress, If it's a name you've heard of and stick to the firm styles...kids do not require pillowtop, etc. Ashley Furniture is reasonable and has great Zero % payment plans...otherwise, I would always check Wal-mart and Target first. Good luck and happy shopping.

SAHM of twins that are soon going to be moving to "big kid beds" too!
Hi Stef:
My son 12 years old now and still sleeps on the first mattress he ever had. We decided that it was important to have the best matress so that he would sleep well. This way he would not become tired during the day and when he began school. It is a firm matress, but I can't recall who makes it. I would suggest going to Mattress Firm and look at the best mattresses. There are so many new types on the market since we had purchased his mattress.
I went by the same advice I got when I was shopping for my own mattress--stick with the 3 S's--Sealy, Simmons, and Serta. They all create high-quality mattresses and most offer at least a 10 year warranty--besides that, go with comfort (though all of the ones we tried were comfy). We ended up with a Simmons Beauty rest that we got when we bought his bed from Rooms to Go. it was a twin and about $300 and I expect it to last him until he's a preteen.
We also got a waterproof mattress cover/protector to protect our investment! (It was about $30)
