What's That Smell?

Sknuk, sknuk, sknuk that's the smell of our entire neighborhood. One neighbor had/has (not sure) a mama and four babies under their back steps. They are every where it seems. Since we live in town we can't shoot them and I really don't want to trap them for fear that they will spray me. Is there any plants, herbs anything we can do to keep the sknuks away from our neighborhood? We live on a short street about 3 blocks long right next to the school so you would think the City would help take care of the problem, but when you call they say "we have had too many calls and can't handle them any more!" Seriously what in the world kind of answer is that? They know this is becoming a huge problem and seem to be ignoing it and it is only getting worse.

Please help with any ideas that you have or have tried we want our kids to be able to play safely outside.

What can I do next?

Please don't put poisoned meat out. Even if you really wish the skunks (or sknuks) harmed or killed, you can't guarantee a neighbor's pet or "innocent" stray won't get into it.

I googled skunk deterrent and found quite a few sites. Most mentioned sprinkling cayenne pepper around the den and "cooking" a spicy mixture of jalepeno and cayenne. Here's one of the links but I found the same idea in a few different places.

We had a mama skunk give birth to pups under our house one year.. To get rid of them, we threw moth balls under there at night after they had gone out for the night.. We also tried to plug up any areas that they may have been entering under the house..

They never came back..

Maybe you can place mothballs around your house to keep them away..

We could not get anyone to come and trap them. One animal rescue group said to trap them and relocate them!!!

We had a momma skunk & her babies get in our garage years & years ago. My mother in law told me to throw some moth balls in the garage & the skunks would leave. Sounded too easy, but it worked & was completely harmless. The mom & her babies vacated in less than 2 days! Just throw some under those back steps & the skunks won't stick around.

Sknuk? lol.
make sure there are no food or water sources around your home and close up all spaces outside your home that they might want to nest in. If you eliminate food and water they wont stay long. Most of the sknuks I see are dead in the road.... they arent too smart.

I heard that coyote urine keeps them away. (Find it online) My dog was sprayed twice in 1 year so I know how bad the "sknuk" smell is! S-K-U-N-K!
They are mostly nocturnal, and like to live UNDER stuff--decks, sheds, etc so block any access to areas like that. TIGHTLY store any garbage or waste--that attracts them.
You & your neighbors could pool some money and call an exterminator to trap and remove them--they know how to deal with them--they use low cages so that they cannot raise their tails & spray when they have to pick up the traps.

I have had them under my deck before. I soak old rags in ammonia and toss them under there. It's a good idea to make sure the skunk isn't there when you do that, but I never really could see that well under there to make sure. There also were some openings around the bottom of the deck so I put ammonia soaked rags there too. Skunks don't stay in one place too long, so if you make your place uninhabitable for them, they tend not to come back. BUT, if they are in your neighborhood, someone is going to have to do something about it. Our city won't do anything either. They legally can't is what they tell us. So it's up to individuals to get rid of them. (It's sad because the babies are adorable. I wish they didn't smell and carry diseases.) The only way to truly get rid of them in your neighborhood is to call a trapper. They are expensive. Maybe you could all pool together to get someone out to help you.

My brother, who is a hunter/fisherman/outdoorsman, says:

A skunk is a better mouser than ten cats, so don't worry about the skunk, get rid of the mice and moles. You take away his food source and he will leave on his own.

My brother had problems with skunks inhabiting under his patio a few years back, tried "smoking" them out, didn't work, but finally resorted to pouring urine in the hole and they were gone. (human urine works)
