It depends on the person. I dont have cable , nor will i till it becomes dirt cheap(which will be soon) So i love netflix. 10 dollars a month and i have more shows than i know what to do with.
My boys suggested we get this. I thought it was a DVD by mail service but my guys tell me we can get movies and shows through their Wii. We already have Dish TV with more shows recorded than we could ever hope to watch. And I get movies free from the library. So what's the deal with Netflix? Is it worth it to get more movies or is this the new way to watch TV?

What was great to us was cancelling the cable service and saving the money. Netflix has pretty much everything, and what it doesn't have you can get for free on Hulu. Plus, there are no commercials so I stopped hearing "can I have that" after every other one.
netflix was the first of its kind. It was the first way to watch movies without going to the video store. If you have other ways of ordering movies, and your happy with the selection, then its just another way of getting movies. We hang onto netfilx because we watch a lot of documentaries and its a good way to search for and get your hands on less common material.
This is the new way to watch TV. It's been predicted for years that we will all eventually watch TV through the internet with all "on demand" programming. The hold up has been that our broadband has not had enough "bandwidth" and was not fast enough. Now that is changing.
We only have Netflix and no cable or satelite TV. Netflix is cheaper and NO commercials. We stream ours to a TV through a Roku box (same concept as the Wii). Previous to this feature, we only had DVDs in our house, through Netflix or occasional purchase. The streaming feature has opened up much more content for the same price.
We have:
a tv,
a Wii,
Dish Network,
and a Netflix subscription.
YES it is good.
Love it.
Yes, the Wii, serves as a platform/receiver in which you can 'stream' Netflix movies with, and watch any movie, on TV.
No, even if Dish has movies, it is not the same as getting it instantly streamed to you, via Netflix, nor are the selections the same etc.
AND, when you stream movies to your TV via the Wii console... THE MOVIES ARE FREE.
It is worth it.
And you can watch anything, instantly, because it is 'streaming' video.
My entire family loves it, including Grandma.
And, sure, we also get the movies DVD's in the mail from Netflix. Our subscription for that is cheap.
I love netflicks. We get new movies in the mail, and I love to watch all the older movie, new and old tv shows, and so many documentaries on instant play whenever I want. I really love older horror films and documentaries and I can get a ton of there, and my hubby loves all the shows off of show time and HBO that we also get on instant play, like weeds, Dexter, Spartacus, oh so many.
There are so many ways to watch Netflix...computer, tv, Wii, PS3, and now my iPhone...there are many shows that I could never watch on tv due to not something the whole family could agree on. I watch those shows season by season and I don't have to wait for the dvd, nor do I have to purchase the dvd at $30 ++++ . With Netflix I just pay my $9 a month and I get everything I need.
We still have some cable but for a long time Netflix was our only form of tv entertainment...the slower your internet network is the more difficult it is to watch streaming though.
We only have one dvd come to us at a time and that is usually something we can't stream on demand. Or something that the kids can't watch. But we love it. I have found shows from my childhood and rewatched because I enjoyed them so much then...
It is so worth it!!! You never have to leave your house!
Last summer was sick summer for me. I had vertigo for 2 1/2 weeks. It was me and the couch and my netflix. Two months later I had pneumonia for a week and again, me the couch and netflix. I would have been miserable w/ just my cable tv. I got to choose what I wanted to watch and when. I wasn't stuck w/ the tv's timetable and schedule.
I had netflix before I had xbox live and verizon fios... my fiance, when we first started dating, signed me up for netflix because otherwise our date nights consisted of channels 6, 8 and 12, LOL!! BORING! So he signed me up and I had a great experience with them (coming from someone who would rather listen to music that sit in front of the boob tube)... you add movies to your queue online, they send them to you, you send them back, they send another. Super fast turn around.
Now if you've already got the dish and your wii (and wii live, or whatever is comparable to xbox live), then there's REALLY no need for netflix ;)
Love it.
We have a xbox live membership so we can stream movies right from our tv and Netflix puts new movies on the live stream every week, and then we have the dvd by mail service which comes with a prepaid envelope to send it back.
We have had Netflix since it first started. We have always liked the selection so much more than Blockbuster.
We love British shows, Independent movies, They have tons of the HBO and showtimes series and ALL of the episodes.
Now we also have the ROKU so we can watch the movie on our TV just by clicking the controller, we do not even have to wait for the DVDS, even though the return and mailing is excellent in our area.
I love giving Netflix as gifts for Fathers Day gift and gifts for the men in the family. The can order as much as they want for that month.
I just started a free 1-month trial with Netflix a few days ago. We are just getting the streaming videos. I love it already! And my 5 year old daughter loves it as well. She already knows how to navigate & start movies on our Wii.
I think we are going to cancel our cable TV service & just keep Netflix. Netflix streaming is $8 per month. Our cable TV is about $40 per month for their "expanded basic".... yeah I think I'll take the $8 and be able to watch whatever, whenever, wherever! Instead of the $40 for me to watch 3 channels... lol
You can also get 1 DVD at a time for an additional $2 a month, but I don't think we'll need that.
I love that I can watch it from the Wii, or from any computer. So I can watch at my parents' house, or even at work if I really wanted to! lol
And you can rate the movies/shows and it will use that info to suggest other movies/shows for you. It can be nice for when you don't know what to watch & you are overwhelmed with the selections.
I did the free one month trial and didnt really like it. you can only have one dvd at a time for the basic membership and the selection of the instant movies is not really that great
Since you have Dish TV, lots of recorded shows, and get movies free from the library I think Netflix would be just another bill for you.
We had Netflix when we didn't have Dish TV or cable, just plain old local television stations. It was great then. When we got Dish TV we canceled Netflix because it seemed like a waste of money.
Last month my husband restarted our Netflix but only because we want to watch a television show from season 1, and can't find it online or DVD anywhere expect Netflix. It is great for that, but we will be canceling again once we finish the series we are watching.
When we still had on demand through cable I would have never considered Netflix. But we ditched Cable last year and not only watch over the air (free) TV and Internet TV, including Netflix.
We do the lowest subscription level ($9 a month) and usually order kid's DVD's. Many of the shows that hubby and I watch are streaming on Netflix or Hulu.
I think it's nice and we're saving about $50 a month.
My sister and BIL just get me 6 months of prepaid Netflix for my birthday and Christmas now and it's so worth it. The only TV shows I watch with Netflix right now are "Dexter", "Inuyasha", and a couple of shows that used to be on Nickelodeon before getting cancelled. I watch a lot of movies online that I wouldn't get to see otherwise. I tend to use it for horror movies. We use it on my sister's 360 or Blu Ray DVD player when I'm over there, although we could use it on the Wii.
We love it! Not only can you watch on the Wii you can watch on your home computer and even a smart phone. I have a 3 and 4 yr old so comes in handy when you are waiting at the Dr or somewhere that requires sitting more than 2 minutes. It really is worth the money if you like to watch movies. It is very convenient too when you can just drop in the mail and within 2 days have a new movie.
When we moved into our new house 3.5 years ago we never got cable, and decided to just do Netflix and Hulu. We haven't missed TV one bit! It's great not to have to deal with commercials and the inevitable "Can I have that?" from my 5-year old. We watch what we want when we want, and can pause when we want. The selection of streaming shows/movies isn't wonderful, but we can always find something good, and they're adding more all the time. We also get 3 discs at a time, so if something's not available to stream, we just order the disc.
We have netflix and it is "ok" we pay $20 a month for 3 movies via mail plus you can view anything they have online which is through computer, phone, games like wii (we have wii and netflix is nice to have on it). So far the only draw back is at night our internet connection slows WAY down making it impossible to watch any movies. Plus Im not sure if they have parental controls meaning kids can pick out any tv show/movies they want to view. My son watches documentaries and disney tv shows like hannah montana. Netflix has a LOT of tv shows on there, season one through etc. so you can catch up on shows if you wish but some are only through the mail. Id say you will be better off spending $20 a month to buy a movie/tv series and having the kids play outside. We are about to move back to the lower 48 from alaska which alaska you rarely get sun so kids stay indoors most of the time...thats all about to change and we will be outside far more so normal tv channels and occassional movie will be plenty :)
I LOVE my Netflix! Even with Dish TV in the house I still love my streaming ability. I also work nights and the only TV in the house is upstairs and not available for 2am movie viewing.
I have the $7.99/month streaming only subscription. It's true, the newest TV episodes/seasons andmovies aren't available for streaming. However I can watch British TV, documentaries, etc all without commercial interruption and on my schedule. There is no recording and/or having to wait for the TV programmers to decide when they want to show it.
As for the DVD's, I know the ads always talked about having to wait "forever" for the next DVD to arrive in the mail. Bulls**t, 4 days at most and that was over the weekends if I dropped it in the bin after mail pick up for the day on Friday. Typically it was a 1-2 day wait and that's nothing.
Their customer service is FANTASMAGORICAL! I called in the wee hours of the morning, and by that I mean 3am, about an odd charge I noticed on my account. I had an email about our conversation in my inbox an hour later and not only had they fixed the error by morning, but they gave me a $1 discount on my next month's subscription fee.
TL;DR Cheaper than Blockbuster and a much wider selection of shows.
We had it for a few years along with cable. The only time it was nice was when there was absolutely nothing to watch on cable, then we turned to netflix. I dont know that its all that great. We have canceled it and my kids havent said a word about it and its been months. I think with cable it just might be overkill….hth
