K.S.
My DD asked for a Rainbow Loom bracelet maker. And a Crazy Eight Ball. And Harry Potter books. And a Playmobil zoo. And a pillow pal (pillow in the shape of a stuffed animal.
I'm also getting her a microscope and an illustrated dictionary.
...besides Barbie? My DD mentioned a DS...what do you recommend?

For my daughter--
Legos
Books
Crafts
Science kits
Things for her American Girl doll
Kinetic sand
Board/card games
My 8 year old wants clothes and "stuff" from Justice. It's all about Justice. Shoes, clothes, pillows, journals - all of their stuff.
She also likes spa stuff, Plushcraft pillows, friendship bracelet makers, crafts of all kinds and room decor. If she likes to bake, you can go to the supermarket and buy small packets of cookie mix (only makes about 12 cookies - less then to eat). My little Pony is big, too.
Well, Mommy of 1 has a daughter just like mine! Virtually the same things on her wish list.
Justice is huge. Not my favorite store, but our daughter adores it. Pretty much anything from that store is on her wish list.
Our daughter also likes the Plushcraft pillows (and a bonus on those is that they really are easy enough for an eight-year-old to do without heavy parental oversight).
My Little Pony Equestria Girls figures and DVDs.
My 7 and 9 year olds have an obsession with everything Polly pocket. They just love it! Other than that they asked for a zoomer puppy and they love matchbox cars.
My daughter is 8 and here are a few things she has asked for.
Pink Whubble ball
My Monopoly
Flutterbuy- rainbow
kinetic sand
Lalaloopsy color me
She also asked for some Barbie and Frozen stuff.
The looms are very complicated. Our 10 year old had a hard time with them once she got past looping them on themselves to make chains. But she did enjoy it a lot.
A DS is deceptive. It requires a game cartridge. If you don't have a case full of games you can't play it. So it's quite expensive in the long run. But almost every kid that's 7-8-9 has one so if she doesn't then that's a good gift overall.
There are various kinds now too, DS, DSi, 3D DSi, and more. Some ONLY play that kind of cartridge and others play 2 kinds or more.
Anything Frozen themed.
Mine wants:
American Girl Doll and accessories.
Easy Bake Oven
Art supplies
Flying hover sphere
A dance game for the xbox
Rebel girl themed nerf gun to fight her brother.
