We will be transitioning our son into a "big boy" bed shortly after he turns 2 for baby #2 (will need the crib). What size bed did others choose for your child's first bed (single, double, queen)???
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I just went thru that about 6 months ago. At first I was going to get a "cute" little toddler bed, then buy a new one in a year or two. Looked into how much those were and said forget it. We bought a full bed with dresser, night stand. At least he will be in this for a long time. Good thing is, he only fell out of bed once:)
Happy shopping!!

We went to a twin bed, and it worked well. I think the toddler beds are a waste of money. If they have the space for a full bed, you could, but a twin is plenty big. Guard rails help until they get used to it.

Go for a single/twin. The double might be OK but a double or queen size can be overwhelming for some little guys.
We always start our boys on a mattress on the floor until they get used to not having crib sides to stop them from rolling off.

I would say get whatever bed size you intend for your son to have when he is older. Just put safety rails on it so he doesn't fall off. Or push one side of the bed up against the wall and just buy one safety rail. I think toddler beds are a waste of money. We got single beds for our daughters when they transitioned from a crib and these will be the beds they will have as older kids. No unnecessary money spent!

I used a twin for my daughter... but I have always thought those "race car" beds would be sooo cool if I had a little boy.

We are going to go with a double when we move our daughter. We really like the idea of being able to lay with her when she's sick or does not want to be alone.

My thought is why buy a toddler bed that you will only use for a short time. We got my son a full bed for his first bed. One less transition the better is my thought.

We went with a toddler bed and it has been wonderful...and defintely not a waste of money. My daughter loves her "big bed". It is easy for her to get in and out of...we don't have to worry about her falling a long distance to the floor.

It was a very, very easy transition for us. No problems whatsoever...one day we just put her in the bed instead of the crib. I do attribute this to the bed being basically the same size as the crib. And she can't talk us into laying down with her because there isn't any room!\

One other (big) reason that we went to a toddler bed first was because we werent' sure what size bed we wanted. This will buy us some time to figure things out!

For space reasons, we went with a toddler bed for our daughter (we don't have room in our kids' room for a crib and a twin bed). I like how low it is to the ground and we didn't have to worry about buying rails to put on the side of the bed. Our daughter loves it because it is just the right size for her. We paid about $80 for ours at Babies R Us. It is a natural wood color that fits with the rest of the furniture in the room. She will be ready to transition out of it about the same time our son is ready to move out of the crib (a convertable one). Then he can take of the toddler bed and we can convert the crib into the head/footboard for our daughter's full size bed.

We had a small room, and got a single bed with a trundle bed that slid underneath. When the trundle was pulled out, it was separate from the main bed and raised up to the same level (not all trundles do this). It worked great as either two single beds or one double (pushed together) for either sleepovers, cuddling with our daughter, or company staying over.

We bought a single and I wish we had bought a double! It depends on the size of your room and how many beds you plan to have in there in the future. Toddler bed is a waste of time and money in my opinion.

When we took ours off of the crib we started with the crib mattress on the floor with the side railing on the edge so he would get used to it then after a couple weeks we moved in the twin (mattress only) then we added the box springs. He loved getting a big bed, both times :)

I agree... toddler beds are a waste of money. We went with two single beds for our twins. They are still sharing a room so space is tight but we didn't want to go with bunk beds. If we only had one at a time or had room to get bigger beds, we may have gone with a full size, but I think a single will last them a long time. We got good, quality mattresses that should get them at least into their teenage years, if not longer.

I think that it probably depends on the size of your room. When my daughter transitioned (19 mos) she went into our old queen bed. We wanted a new king and it seemed to be a waste to not use it. We did put the mattress and box spring on the floor (no bed frame) until she was 3 yrs. when, for addl underbed storage space, we put a bed frame on it.

My son is now 15 mos. I don't need a new bed and we don't have a spare sitting around, so I think that this time we will probably get him at least a full size bed (one that he can grow into) and go thru the same process of transitioning him as we did our daughter.

I hope this helps! Congrats on your pregnancy as well.

we have a toddler bed for our 20-month-old, that uses the same size mattress as a crib. it seemed to help her transition really well, with the bed being the same size. also, you probably want something lower to the ground than an adult bed, as he may fall out, even with railings. my daughter has once or twice, and since the bed is closer to the ground, she didn't get hurt at all - just startled.

I have a toddler bed we've used with my first and now second. Granted - I got it free so I've used it and I think it's great. I probably wouldn't have bought one though. But, I love how low to the ground it is, and the transition was super easy for my boys. But, I transitioned them closer to age 3. At two I for sure put whatever mattress on the floor so it wasn't so high in the air.

We have a twin for my 4 1/2 year old, and I think it's great. My brother's and I always had twins, and we all fit just fine as teenagers. My husband said he had a full or queen as a teen, but twin up until then.

We just used the single bed that we already had. It has a railing so we didn't have to worry about our son falling out.

I haven't read the other responses so this might have already been said but... we buy our kids full size beds when they outgrow their crib. I like it for a few reasons. 1) my three kids and I, or my husband or I can easily all fit on the bed together to read books, 2) less likely for the kid to fall out since it's bigger than a twin, 3) I think they will appreciate a bigger bed when they take it with them when they move out, 4) if necessary, the bigger beds can be used for company and our kids could sleep on the floor somewhere else.

We went with a double for both our children since we had the room. That way when they are sick or scared they is enough room for you to comfortably lay with them. You also have room for guests as well. My children get excited when they get to let family use their room.
