What Odd Things Are Your Children Afraid Of?

So I was strolling with my son in his stroller and started yelling and freaking out. I couldn't get really get what he was so upset about, so I asked him. He pointing and gesturing and he was saying "the dandelion". When we were walking I must have brushed against it and all the little white things flew all over the place. I guess being so low to the ground it freaked him out.

He's also afraid of: pine cones, the alien from Mars Attacks!, worms (I mean, I'm getting the hell outta here, dropping everything in my hand so I can run, kind of scared when it comes to worms) and stink bugs.

When I was kid I was TERRIFIED of those long hair boots that were popular in the early '80's. My aunt used to chase me around the house and bark with them on. Oh, she was mean! haha

What are/were your kids afraid of?

What can I do next?

My now 6 yr old used to be afraid of elevators. It made for some long rides in the elevator when at the airport we would have to get into the already crammed elevator with all the luggage and my daughter would loose it as soon as the doors closed. Her most recent fear is souding like Linus from Charlie Brown when her loose tooth falls out. Where that came from I have no idea.

When my son was a toddler I had my fish tank running and he was afraid of the fish! He'd stand there watching them and run away screaming in terror when they swam towards him. My best guess is that he didn't understand that they couldn't swim beyond the glass.

my son for many years at christmas was very very afraid of the "dancing flowers" decoration i had. they would spin in a circle in a pot. all he had to see was the wrapping from the pot and go screaming in to the bathroom and lock the door. it was nice when he was little to put that decoration in front of the tree because he wouldn't go near the tree and play with the decorations. he is now over that fear but i have told him i'm going to save the dancing flowers and give them to his wife someday for a wedding gift!!!

My daughter has a love/hate for trains. Sometimes she's thrilled to see them and hear the horn, other times she's terrified to tears. It's wierd, at the mall right beside the track she's thrilled, in our home a good 10 miles from the track and she's scared?!

She hates ants..we have big black ones. She's not scared unless they are too close, but she'll chase them down to smoosh them at every chance.

She's fascinated by dogs but doesn't know them and is very nervous around them, we have cats. She's not fond of their tongues and wet noses.

My son when he was a toddler was terrified of dryer sheets. At the time we had a large screen TV and to get him to stop banging on the screen my husband would tape a dryer sheet on it to keep his hands off. I admit, it was funny to see his reaction so sometimes we'd egg it on:)

My 3 yr old is afraid of my mom's ceramic frog sponge holder. My 7 yr old is afraid of growling/roaring sounds (like when someone pretends to be a lion or dog).

ETA: All 3 of my kiddos were afriad of our Elf on the Shelf. After reading the book, I had to reassure them the elf didn't really come to life at night. Even after that, they still weren't too sure about him!

My son used to be deathly afraid of the wind, even a slight breeze. He also burst into tears at the WORD "poison ivy." Now, at 5.5, his only issue is this booster seat (for the car) that says "Space Monsters" on it. He's like, "You know that seat I'm NOT scared of, let's not bring it, okay?"

I remember being about his age and lying in bed shaking, thinking that if since there hadn't been alligators under my bed so far, there definitely would be that night -- law of averages or something.

My daughter, 8, cannot stand the automatic flushing toilets. She loves the soap and paper towel machines that are like that but not the toilets. I feel for her when we get stuck in a bathroom that only has that type but what can ya do? She's stated that it isn't she afraid it'll hurt her but rather she hates the sound and it's way too loud to her.

DD (6): cheese and yogurt

It is a pickiness that extends to an irrational fear. She hasn't eaten anything from the fridge for 2+ weeks because of some soft cheese in there.

:(

Oh yeah...we have automatic toilet bowl flusher and loud hand dryer fear, too.

Our floor vents...apparently I told him once that if he put something down there it would start a fire. I don't remember saying it but he freaks out when our 16mo old throws something thinking it could go in a vent. Fire too...he asks a lot about what we would do if our house started on fire. Seriously I don't remember it but he was probably playing around it and I didn't want him throwing stuff down there.

My 8-year-old Cheyenne is terrified of those harmless May-flies (some people call them mosquito hawks) that fly around in the spring & early summer. They are TOTALLY harmless, and I've explained to her that they are good because they eat mosquitos. She won't listen, though, she screams to high heaven if one comes anywhere near her. Crazy kid.

My four year old son...was coloring on a piece of paper at his color table...the paper flew to the floor and he jumped up on top of the chair...screaming "SPIIIIIDDDDEERRRRRRRR"...thank goodness for his almost 7 year old sister she came to the rescue...but he refused to get down off the chair until we proved it was dead. I know it's a common "fear"...but between ants and spiders my son screams and cries.

I don't get it...because this is the same boy who wanted to jump from our deck into the trampoline (enclosure)...yes into meaning the deck was an high as the enclosure and he wanted me to let him jump into it! (BTW not hate PMs I did NOT let him do it)

ETA: My almost 7 year old daughter...I'm not sure she's really afraid of anything "unusual".

My cousin who is the same age as my daughter though would freak out when in a public restroom the auto flush would happen...screaming, crying, hysterics!

My 6 year old is afraid of the wind. She has some reason to be because we have had problems with trees falling down. I am terrified of mice-I just freak out at the mention of a mouse-yuck!!
