I got a flyer the other day from my daughters school about "Fied Day" being next month. I keep forgetting to ask the teacher and every time I think about it it's always after school hours, so maybe I can get the answer from other moms. As far as I can remember when I was in school we had a day where we did potatoe sack races and just basic competition with other teachers, I just can't remember if it was called Field Day or not. My daughter is in 1st grade and this will be her first time participating.

What can I do next?

It is exactly how you remember it except it isn't against just the teachers. The kids have a blast. Plan to attend if you don't you will wish you had.N.

Hi C.,

If I remember, our field days were actual trips to some place. We would go to a park, to a museum. I lived in Houston growing up and one of our field days was to the San Jacinto Monument and Battlegrounds.

yup! you know exactly what field day is as far as I know!! That is what we called it when I was little! You could always call the school to make sure. You don't have to talk to her teacher. Anyone at the school will know!!

Field Day is a time for the kids to get outside and have fun competitions with each other or against other classes. We have things like tug-of-war, "Fishing", things that involve water (soak water up in a sponge and run to the other side and squeeze the water out in your bucket and return, etc. At our school, 3rd-5th grades go out in the morning (8:30-11:30) and Kindergarten through 2nd goes in the afternoon (12:30-2:30). The kids have a great time. Parent volunteers are essential to this being a fun, successful day!

One piece of advice...don't forget to lather her up with sunblock!! It's so easy to get burned since the weather doesn't feel that hot. One of my friend's forgot to put some on her son and he was crispy! She'll have a blast for sure!!

We used to be in Plano ISD, and are now in McKinney, and at both locations Field Day is exactly what you are referring to. They do different relay races, activities, etc outdoors. Leaving and going somewhere for us so far has always been referred to as Field Trips, not Field Day. Hope that helps.

I taught until about 4 years ago. Field Day is pretty much what you think it is! No classes, fun, outdoor games...she'll love it. Just don't dress her in anything you don't want grass stains on.

As I rememeber groing up in the Carrollton/Farmers Branch School District "Field Day" is where all the kids have competetion with each other doing relay races, high jump, low jump, potatoe sacks, water races, etc and the kids have a blast.

They eat hot dogs and hamburgers, the older kids 3rd-5th graders go in the morning and the kinder-2nd go in the afternoon or vica versa.

There are a lot of mom's who volunteer. When the kids go away somewhere like museums, zoo, threatre, etc is called a field trip.

Have fun.

Field Day aka Field Trip. Same as mentioned from the other moms. However, my daughter's school refers to Field Day as a day at the school's athletic complex and they have relay races and all sorts of competitions, plus jumping house, hot dogs, etc. They are literally at the school's "field" (football / track stadium) and spend a "day" of play for the kids. Otherwise trips away from the school are field trips. Maybe you can e-mail the teacher or school to find out the details. Usually the schools are calling for parental participation because it is a whole grade if not more that participates.
