What Is Best Diaper for Leaks "Up the Back"?

This is a problem new to us. Our second child, a boy, has bowel movements that are somewhat loose. Inevitably, the diaper allows leaking up the back of his diaper and, of course, we have a huge mess on our hands. BTW, it happens more with my husband, because he doesn't tend to check his bottom as often! We have tried Pamper Cruisers (worked wonderfully for our oldest) and Luvs. I don't want to spend a ton of $$ experimenting. Does anyone have any brand suggestions, or otherwise? He is 10 months old.

What can I do next?

Cloth diaper covers are the best. I recommend the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. Here there is free shipping and is where I get mine. No more leaks.

I used to deal with the leaks up the back quite a bit with my first 2 kids, when I used disposables. But with my youngest 2, I only used cloth, and I never had to deal with those types of messes.

I use Fuzzi Bunz diapers, which are every bit as easy as disposables, just without the leaks.

You mentioned that you didn't want to spend a bunch of money, so maybe cloth diapers would be a good option for you in order to control leaks and save money at the same time.

If that's not for you, you may want to just add a diaper cover that normally goes over cloth diapers (as another person suggested). This would probably work really well because the elastic on the back of the diaper cover would contain whatever the disposable diaper lets out.

Hi R.,
One of my good friends way back in school was named R.- she was from Germany.
Just a suggestion for you to think about- my daughter uses Seventh Generation organic diapers, which you can purchase at some stores, or order online at www.diapers.com. Why would someone use organic diapers??? Because we found out that regular diapers are bleached with chlorine and sprayed with chemicals, like formaldehyde for longer shelf life. This can't be good to surround a child's genitals for 2-3 years with chemicals. Better safe than sorry. It seems like the younger generation is having so many infertility issues and skin irritation issues- maybe someday they will find a connection. Anyway, I don't know if they fit any better on the backside, but they are at least a lot healthier for the child. You can also buy chlorine free diaper wipes, or better yet, just plop the child under the faucet to rinse off with plain soap and water and save some money!!
Since you are mom to 2 young boys, would you take 18 minutes to watch a video that could make a tremendous difference in your lives? "Toxic Brew" is a Canadian investigative report on chemicals in common everyday cleaning products and I found it quite informative. It can be viewed at www.theglobalsuccessteam.net and click on "Toxic Brew" in the upper left. I also would recommend a new book just out "Green Goes with Everything", by Sloan Barnett. I wish that I had known some of this information when my children were young. I have now switched over to safer, green products in my life, and you can check it out at my Mamasource business 'M. Goes Green'.
Best Wishes to you,
M.

When my son was about 6 months this happened almost everyday. I was using huggies natural fit and switched to Pampers baby dry and it quit happening. They seem to go higher up the back. It only lasted a couple months cause now i can buy either pampers or huggies what ever is on sale. Hope this helped N.

If you've already tried the pampers, I would try huggies. Cheaper than pampers and the only thing that worked for mine. I buy at costco or sams club, it will repay your membership in the first few boxes you buy (i priced it out and saved about 5 cents a diaper. Higher cost at first because you are buying in larger quantities.

I agree with Amy H and Kim H. Cloth diapers do a wonderful job at containing possible blow outs. They're really simple to use and really not gross like so many people think. They've changed so much in the past few years. Definately worth checking out. I suggest www.abbyslane.com . She has free shipping and it is incredibly fast if you feel like looking into cloth diapers.

With my daughter we use Huggies and with my son we used Pampers Cruisers. Now is this during the day as well as night? I would say for evenings I would put a pad at the back of the diaper, kind of create a barrier. Sometimes there isn't anything you can do for something like that except get creative. JMOP, but it's worth a try and you can buy them in bulk at your local Sam's or Costco.

Good Luck!

Whenever my son started having leaking issues, we moved his diaper up a size. Pampers baby-dry or cruisers have always worked great for us. Luvs are okay, but do not hold up at all for night-time for my son.

it could be how your sons is built .. my daughter was very tall and skinny and we had a lot of leaks up the back.

my son was chubbier and we didnt have leak problems.

Huggies do have a thick band of elastic in the back.

But they do not fit as well around the leg.

Huggies never fit my duaghter but she was super skinny.

I have found pampers baby dry to be the best all around diaper. Pampers cruisers dont seem to hold as much pee and they get the gel on the babies skin.

Sounds like you need to go up a size in diapers. When this started happening to my daughter I went up a size and it solved most of the problem.

BTW - we use the Target brand diapers and like them a lot!

Depending on how old he is, you could get a cloth diaper cover and put it on over the disposable to keep leaks in.

we really like the Kirkland brand from Costco. They work wonderfully with our child.
We did cloth diaper for my first 2 children and I found that it was the same .. leaks out the back and mostly out the legs if you don't have a good fit.
I still have all my cloth diapers. We just chose to diaper our last differently. Honestly I like doing the Kirkland diapers the best one box lasts us about 5+ weeks.

Goodluck finding one that fits!! it's just trial and error.

HI R.
I also used cloth diapers and Bummis Super Whisper Wrap covers, and didn't have blow out problems.
Not to be dramatic but there better for the environment, and a bunch of nasty chemicals are use in making diapers.
Environmental experts say that it can take up to 500 years for a disposable diaper to degrade in a landfill.

Good luck what ever you choose. A. H

Huggies or Kirkland brand (at Costco) worked for us. We had Pampers Cruisers and every time she had a bowel movement they either leaked up the back or out the leg. Once I changed brands that completely stopped. I have used both brands interchangably and both are great.

Both my kids did this--I tried every brand on the market and Pampers seemed to work best. They didn't completely eliminate the problem, but it happened alot less frequently.

Huggies work great for us. The only times she's leaked (pee) up the back is at night about 3 times in 7 1/2 months but that's cause she sleeps for 12-13 hours straight at night and its bound to happen every once and a while. I also get them at Costco. You could also try going a size higher, if it happens a lot that might be the problem. Good Luck

I think leaks up the back is just something you will have to deal with for a little while. I had that problem with my daughter until she started eating a decent amount of table food. I found that Huggies worked best because they have a higher and tighter back than the other ones we tried.... I was very pleased and will use huggies until my next one (yet to be born) is past the poopsplosion stage and then I will switch back to luvs as they are much cheaper and I like them. That is what my oldest uses now.

Oh my goodness...why do some of the moms on here have to be so dramatic????

Anyway...We have the same problem, except that it only happens at daycare...it has become sort of a joke that he 'saves it for her'!! (She is my SIL...LOL)

We use Huggies in the red package...works a 'little' better.

We had this problem with our second child as well. I switched to Huggies Supreme while he was having this problem because the back of the diaper is cinched, almost like elastic. Although it wasn't fool proof, they did cut down on the leaks.
