My son is almost 2 and is going to his first school friend birthday party on Sun. The little girl is turning 3 and I am at a loss for what to get her. Anyone have some suggestions? Thank you!
For birthday parties that my son goes to, I usually buy gifts from Learning Express. I go to the one in Rice Village. They will personalize (with the child's name) your gift for free...piggy banks, lap trays, stationery cases, etc. They'll also gift wrap it for free (and they do such a cute/creative job!). Your personalized gift is sure to be a BIG hit!
For most girls this age anything with the Disney Princesses on it would work well. As another mom mentioned dress up clothes and art supplies are great ideas, too. When you're picking out the gift, try to avoid anything with a lot of pieces. My daughter received a princess book with many reusable stickers that you could place on the pages of the book to change the princesses clothes (similar to Colorforms when we were kids?). She loved the book, but within a week most of the little stickers were lost.

My daughter is 3 and her favorite gift was a play microwave. She also LOVES My Little Pony, puzzles, books, dress up clothes, art supplies, and fairy princess anything! Girls are really easy to please at this age. I'm sure no matter what you choose she'll love it!
Crayola art supplies, dress up clothes (dresses, the horrible plastic high heels, jewlery, purses, ect.), dolls, play food. My DD is 3 and this is all that she ever plays with. She has every toy known to man, but she just doesn't touch anything else. Art is the biggy for this age.
Stay away from Brat dolls and barbies. They can be more contraversial then one might think.
A good gift is one that the giver has thought about and the recipient will appreciate.
If you don't know the little girl's tastes very well, the best thing to get is something she can always use. Art supplies (coloring items, playdoh, stencils, paper, etc) or dress-up items (shoes, hats, jewelry, tools, etc) are pretty universal. Ask your son what he thinks she'd like or what they play with at school. He may answer "a truck!" but you never know... my girls love playing with trains!
A nice touch is to have your son make (or at least sign) the card. Personally, I don't purchase birthday cards (unless there is money/giftcard involved), instead I have my girls make a Happy Birthday sign or write/draw on the gift bag.
