Hi, i have a friend who is leaving States with family for London. I am not gonna see her again. I want to buy a gift for her and for her 5yrs old boy and 1yr old girl. She cann't carry too much luggage as she has to pay extra for that and i want to give her something that does not increase her luggage weight. The biggeset challenge is gift ideas for kids. Please help. She is leaving this weekend and i have invited her for dinner this Friday. So i have limited time to shop.
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I wonder if you can get her address and then gift her through internet shopping - that way you can get her something and she doesn't have to carry it. You can give her a gift certificate letting her know about the surprise - that can be the memento, and then the gift :)

And don't assume you'll never see her again - keep checking airfares - sometimes they're the same price as traveling in the US!

I have moved overseas and have many ex-pat friends who have moved overseas and I don't at all advise giving anything that has to fit in luggage.

How about a season pass to some educational attraction in London? I LOVE the Tate Gallery, but it is not so much for kids.

Maybe there is some kind of kindermusic style class that you can investigate online and buy her a gift cert. for that. You can e-mail it to her and she doesn't even have to print it out until she is ready to use it.

No matter how small your gift, every inch of luggage space is precious (especially with two small folks in tow!) and whatever you give her will likely be left behind.

Alternatively, you can present her with the gift and let her know that she can't take it home yet because you want to mail it to her, thereby saving her the luggage space. She'll appreciate that!

You're a good friend.

A goodbye gift should be something that, that is remembered throughout one’s life. A beautiful card or a token of love will keep the link forever. As far as the kid is concerned you can gift her beautiful toy which she may cherish looking at. Hope this helps you.

Something ordered online to arrive at her new address after she gets there. Then give her a card before she leaves explaining what you got her and when she should expect it. Maybe with a picture of it printed out. And make sure it is delivered with a gift receipt so she can return it if it isn't right for her.

What price range are you looking for? That can make a huge difference on what we'd suggest.

Maybe have a photo book made of her and you having fun together.

Give her photos... of you, them, her kids, any events/special times you had together... make an album of it.
Or put it on a computer disk. That won't take up much room at all.
And you won't have to 'shop' for it... just download it from your computer to a disk!
And maybe write a poem...
or give her a nice book.
