Hello again ladies. Wanting to find out if anyone else has dealt with this and what did you do to help? My almost 3yr old has had pain off and on for the last 3 weeks when he urinates. I've taken him to his pediatrician and he does not have a bladder infection. But said that his urethra was what is hurting him. She told me to have him sits baths in cornstarch and have him drink more water to dilute any acidic foods/drinks that he's taking in. We've increased his water intake and he's been doing his baths and I've been applying neosporine as instructed by his pediatrician. He's a picky eater, so the only way I can get him to intake any type of veggies, is if I mix veggies with applesauce. I know the applesauce and other fruits have citric acid, but I don't see how we can avoid every bit of citric acid and he not get his intake of fruits and veggie, or is there? What else can be done to clear this up? Thanks for your help!!

Just an idea for you ~ an alternate way for him to get his servings of fruits and veggies is to give him V8 Fusion Light. It tastes great (the kids love it as it tastes like fruit juice) and they get a full serving of fruit and vegetables in every 8 oz. glass. I know there is a Strawberry Banana (which will still have some acid), a Peach Mango and I think there is also a Berry. The Light contains much less sugar than the regular.

Cranberry juice (the real thing) can help. It tastes better mixed with grape juice. This cleans out the urinary tract and helps avoid infections.

You can also give kids' chewable cranberry tablets which is higher in concentration when needed. My daughter has no trouble chewing them and they do help.

Cranberries!

I'm not sure what an help the pain, but as for sneaking in veggies the Sneaky Chef book is awesome. It shows how to sneak veggies in foods without it looking or tasting different, I've tried it, and got lots of kids to eat veggies and they didnt even know it . Good luck

My nephew just had the same problem. My sister's pediatrician sent them in for an X-Ray and found that he was not pooping completely so he was all backed up! She took him to several doctors and then finally the ER before they figured out what the problem was. He is now on medication to help with the constipation.

Three weeks is a long time - I would see an urologist to rule out any problems that may have gone undetected.

HI E.,

I really feel for your son; that must be so painful. I have heard that some women get what is called vaginal pain. What relievs it is a low oxalate diet. There is a Yahoo group that deals with this. I don't think that is only women that use that site as I know a lot of people on the group talk about their children as well. It is run by this wonderful lady called Susan Owens. Susan is a doctor and very knowlegeable. My mother used to put us into the bath with bicarb and this was great for painful "nether regions".
She would use about a cup of bicard to a bath of warm water. It helped to neutralize the burning. Also Epsom salts are good to, but I am not sure if it is a stinging solution or not. Also like the previous note do take your child to a uroligist. They will know immediately the solution for the problem.
All the best,

W.

take your son to a urologist. if you increase water intake, then it wont matter that you hide veggies in applesauce. there could be a lot of other problems going on besides his bladder. it does not make sense to have your little boy hurting just because he has to pee. it is time for a specialist.

I agree, see a uriologist.

To deal with the immediate discomfort, cranberry. You can get it in capsule form. It is alkaline and therefore neutralises the acid in the fruit and his urine, making it less painful

My son had issues with his urethra as well although it may be a different issue. His discomfort was caused by dyes and perfumes from laundry soap. If he wet the bed the soap would manage to get into the urethra and cause pain. I switched to perfume free laundry soap and stopped bubble baths and it solved the problem.
Good luck - hope this helps!

I would take him to a urologist and have him tested for allergies.

Wonder if he has a blockage? Keep an eye on that and don't let the dr's. Keep telling you nothing is wrong. You should not have pain over and over when going to the bathroom. Hope they figure out what it is.

Try calcium citrate (not calcium carbonate). I have read that it clears crystals in your urine, although it takes a while to work. Sorry, I don't know more, but the web should help. I just remember reading this in a health magazine a while back.

Go see a specialist, not your pediatrician. Makes sure he doesn't have kidney stones or anything more serious.
Make him drink lots of water in the mean time. No carbonated drinks or sodas. Might try juicing some fun drinks for him with veggies in them. You can add an apple since he likes them.
Make the appointment soon. Best of luck! Let us know what it was ok!

The poor kid!!! I know it's painful for him and I know of a medication (a temporary solution) that may ease his discomfort. I've used it as an adult and it's the only thing that has helped me. It's called pyridium and it is an antiseptic/analgesic for the urinary system. It turns the urine a reddish/orange color and he needs to drink LOTS of water. The pediatric dose is 12 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses. I would definetly demand to see a urologist. Until you get in you may want to ask your pedi for this med.
Good luck and I really hope your little guy feels better very soon!!!
