68, but we live in Texas in a drafty house.. If it is totally frozen here, I sometimes move it up to 71-72..
I am a person that is always hot, so as long as I have a hat on my head and some socks.. I am fine.
Hi Moms!
I live in an apartment, its very cold! I have put up old t-shirts by the doors, curtains and sheets around the windows...still very cold! Anyhow; I was wondering what do you all keep your thermostat set at night during the hours of sleeping? I have it set at 67 but it says 71, I highly doubt its even 71 degrees in here seeing how I have two pairs of socks on and my feet feel like ice. So to those moms or ladies out there who do live in an apartment, what do you keep your temp at? What about moms who live in a house? I suppose its harder to keep a house warm than it is an apartment? I am on the top floor too. :)
Thanks!
:)

We live in AZ and I'm mostly concerned about what the a/c is set on in the winter! Last winter I don't think I had the heat on at all. We wore sweaters and socks and had lap blankets on while we watched tv. But I generally would keep it low, like 64. If I have it up any higher, it wreaks havoc on my sinus'. =)
In an APARTMENT... I kept the heat at 80-85. Cost about $30 a month
Our HOUSE :P costs about $400 a month to keep it in the 60's. Same SIZE as the bleedin apartment, it's just the price difference between oil and gas.
I keep a thermometer on the wall in addition to the thermostat. Always have. It's part of my 'never wrong' clock my dad gave me. It's been *Striking* how often my thermostat is full of it.
God. I miss 80-85 degrees of toastyness. And the $30 bill!
We live in a house, I'm near Houston Tx so we actually have our AC on right now! Lol, but when it gets cold we keep it at 67 or 68. I like it at 66 though, but it is cold when you get out of the bed! :)
I live in a house now. I lived in apartments until I was 29 years old. Actually apartments are usually a bit warmer than houses unless the insulation is bad, so I am surprised your place is cold, especially being on the top the floor with the heat rising from the lower apartments. The top apartment is usually hard to cool in the summer b/c of the open exposure.
I love my programmable thermostat! 68 at night. It goes up to 72 @ 5am so it is warm when we get up. Down to 62 @ 8am for the day. @ 5pm it goes to 68/72 for the evening then back down to 68 overnight.
I would not consider 71 degrees warm - I would have to wear a bunch of clothes too - actually I do b/c we keep it at 72 during the day. If I had my druthers it would be at 76!
I turn it down to 60 to save oil $$ and put lots of blankets/down comforters on the beds. When I wake up in the morning the thermometer is usually 59. Brrrrrr! But I remember the circa 1900 house I grew up in being much colder. I used to stand on the heat register while getting dressed in the morning.
I live in a house and we keep it at 68 to keep the kiddos comfortable (2 1/2 year old & 4 month old). Before we had kids, my husband and I would turn it down to 55 overnight and I used him to warm my feet. :D He's hot natured, though, so he didn't mind... cooled him down some!
The thermostat may say one thing, but it may be much cooler where you are sitting or sleeping. Before we redid some of our duct work, our thermometer on the thermostat would say 72 (in the dining room) but in the den, where we sit and watch tv in the evening it was only 66 and upstairs in the bedrooms it was sometimes 82. Unfortunately, in an apartment there isn't really much you can do about it.
I have a programmable thermostat that goes down to 64 at night and comes on early in the morning and heats everything up to 72 by the time we have to get up.
68 at night and 70 during the day
we keep our house at 68 during the day and at night time - although if it feels chilly I'll kick the heat up to 72
With small kids in the house, our's is a constant 67. When it gets really cold in Jan and Feb, I will put it up to 68 or 69. One of our bedrooms is an ice box and my poor girl has to sleep in there. She is too young for a space heater.....
64 during the night when we sleep. Then 67 during the day when we are all at home working since Hubby & I both ____@____.com we get below Zero we just bundle up more and wear slippers.
We live in a house and keep the thermostat set at 62 during the night and 67 during the day. I stay plenty warm at night under my quilt and sometimes an electric blanket. I'm cold during the day unless I dress warmly or keep really busy.
I've set the thermostat to 72 and still felt cold. I don't understand why 72 feels OK in the summer but not the winter. Perhaps its the lack of humidity?
I wear fleece lined boots as house slippers and wear my robe over my clothes so that my legs are covered too. Without the boots my feet are ice cold too. When I'm watching TV or reading I often put a shawl over my robe.
My daughter and family live in an apartment and they rarely have to turn on their heat because they're on the third floor with an apartment above and below. Nice!
You can buy insulated fabric to put up on your windows. I used the one that has a silver face. It's lighter weight and works better than others. It's inexpensive. I'm not using it in this house.
I'd love to keep it at 68, but hubby gets a bit cold, so I have to compromise and go to 70.
If hubby could he would have it set at 80, but I pay the bill & keep it at 73 most of the time unless he overrides the thermostat. We live in a 4 bedroom house that was built in 1893... we have replaced the windows & doors and the furnace was put in the year before we bought the house in 2005. We still have draft issues with we would love to fix, but haven't had the ablitity to. Our gas bill does run us about $250 per month during the heating season... but sometime you just have to deal with that issue.
You can get winterizing stuff at most home improvement stores, like plastic for over the windows or see if the seals are bad or missing & find out if you can have the windows recaulked by the landlord or can do it yourself. Make sure any AC units is covered good, usually better to cover it outside, but if it is a window unit that can't be removed inside covering with blankets, tape & a plastic bag is better then nothing. So you know fabric can breath, plastic is a better barrior cause it doesn't let the drafts through... when hubby works on houses, they but up the insulation, then a plastic barrior to stop drafts before putting up the drywall. Keeps the houses warmer... the rooms in the house that we have done that do stay warmer then the rooms we haven't replaced the walls yet.
Good luck keeping the place warm... it's always nice to be toasty in the winter.
I live in a house. At night the thermostat is set for 58 and is programmed for 64 about 1/2 hour before we get up so it is warm for showers. Then the temp drops to 62 during the day. We keep it low so we don't have outrageous gas bills every month (about $150-$175 at the temps we set). We qualified for free insulation which was installed in February. Hopefully, that will cut the bill down a little and then we might raise it a degree or two.
We are used to the cold. My dds usually don't have socks on when they are home during the day and even sometimes wear shorts. When we have company other than dds' friends, we will raise the temp a couple degrees. But we rarely have anyone visit.
If we set our thermostat to the 70s like some of you, we would roast.
We live in a house that was built in 1903, and have replaced the worst of the windows and doors and plan on doing the rest next year. WOW did those new windows help a LOT! Our second floor gets really warm at night because the heat rises, so I set ours at 58 at night and 68 during the day in the winter, if we have a run of below zero temps, I will bump it up to 72. Depending on how many below zero days we get in any given month, our gas bill (which covers heat, cooking, and hot water) runs about $200-300/month, but we use balanced billing, so my monthly charge is $100-130 year round.
I suggest that you get yourself to a home improvement store and buy the plastic wrap for your windows. T-shirts won't stop drafts, and the plastic seals all the way around the window, where most of your heat is escaping. I also suggest you get some down comforters, they hold in your body heat like nothing else. For the worst rooms, you can hang blankets on the walls.
live in mid-MO & I'm jealous over the low gas bills posted! We avg $250-350 during the winter months! (& it runs the same for the summer months for the electric). & this is totally crazy, because we heat with wood, too.
For the winter, the thermostat is kept at 65 thru the night, & 68 thru the day. But the cheater is: we use a wood stove insert in our fireplace, & it runs 24/7. If we have a barn-burner going, it can be as warm as 75 in the living room.....or warmer! The trade-off then would be....it's freakin' cold in the bedrooms, because the furnace doesn't run! Zero environmental planning when the insert was installed by the previous owners...it blows right past the house thermostat...:(
To feel warmer, wear fleece-lined booties. Always wear a base layer under your clothes. & warm the house thru cooking! A pot of soup or bread baking will make the house feel warmer.....
We live in a house and I turn ours down to 62 at night...I'd prefer 60 but DH is too cold at that temp when he gets up at 5:30 for work. It's not too big a drop for us though...it's set at 64 during the day, 66 absolute tops.
we havent had the heat on yet this season. we try to hold off as long as we can. right this second in the middle of the night it's 62 in here. i feel fine in my sweats and thick slipper socks. it's a nice change from the heat we've been having these past three years during the summers. soon we will only turn the heat on during the nights and back off during the days. we also have small heaters that we might turn on for up to an hour just to take the chill out of the bedrooms before heading to bed. another option is getting mattress heating blankets that you lay on. i know its cold when i get in bed but within a few minutes i usually warm up under the covers without any help. by the way we live in a brick one story house without carpet. when we do turn the heat or a/c on we set it to 72.
i keep mines on 75 because my daughter is young i need it to be warm in the house so she doesn't have to be bundled up
We live in So Cal and at night keep our thermostat at 66, otherwise I sweat like the dickens with all the blankets and covers on!
I haven't gone through all your responses, but if someone hasn't said it... check your filter? If it's filthy it's preventing heat to a certain extent. If you're on the top floor and it's cold I'd also wonder about the insulation, yet living in the apmt you get the insulation you get.
I live in a 3-story TH and my girls are on the top floor. i keep it at 72 which is cool for us on the 2nd floor, but comfy on the 3rd floor. when i used to live in a old tudor home i'd keep it at 68. i think sometimes the thermostats don't register properly. if i ever had my tudor thermo set at 72 i'd dry out!
We keep it at 56 at night and when we're not home during the day and at 66 in the evening when we're home. Heating oil/fuel/gas is expensive so unless we're wearing warm slippers and a down vest or a fleece jacket inside already then the heat isn't getting turned up. At night we sleep under heavy down comforters, so it's really quite comfortable.
At night We keep our house at 68 during the summer and 60-62 during the winter. I turned on my A/C on for about 10 days this year. I turned on the heater (gas) for 8-10 days last winter.
My wife and I both like blankets and quilts so we tend to just let the house get cold at night and enjoy the warmth of each other and the weight of the blankets and quilts. For our 28th anniversary we bought a lama fur pelt with a bear sewn into it. For our 38th anniversary we went to ND and got a real buffalo hide. We put one or the other on our bed during the worst part of the winter.
We average $90 a month for electricity and $25 per month for gas.
Good luck to you and yours.
We keep the heat at 68 or 69. I think that's still a little warm but the little guy is in the coldest room in the house and we don't want him to freeze. I would ask your landlord to have the thermostat serviced/fixed. Sounds like it's out of whack to me!
I want to sleep comfortable at night so I set it where ever it is comfortable to me, be it 75 or 70. I can keep warmer during the day and wear more clothes but during the night I want to be comfortable. I do not turn the heat down during the night but do it during the day instead.
Go to Lowes or some other home supply place and buy some foam insulation sheets. Ours have a shiny foil side and penguins stamped on it. It is white Styrofoam inside. They can be cut to fit in the window and don't cause damage. We put ours behind the couch when we take them out. They can get broken and fall apart but if they are handled gently they will last for years.
The foam keeps out both heat and cold. They are wonderful.
In the winter I keep the thermostat set at 62 or 63. When we are home we primarily heat the house with our fireplace that runs off propane.
I have only turned our heat on once this year so far, but when it's on, I set it to 71. I like to wear yoga pants and a tank in my house year round. We have flipped the fire place on with the fan, and that nicely warms things up. The house was at 67 this morning...and no one was freezing. Basically I try to make my house a little warmer every summer and a little cooler every winter to cut costs. So even though it's only 1 degree a year, it helps! Since last year was 71, I'll put the heat on 70 this year.
My heat/cooking are gas and my lights/ac are electric. Year round I pay $185 for electric and $90 ffor gas. I just got my most recent electric bill and I'm paid up a month and a half and my most recent gas bill has a $70 credit on there.
