What Do You Feed, Give to a Child When They Coughs and No Appetite.

HI,
My 3 year old has this dry cough (I'll take him to see a doctor tomorrow) and no appetite. I was wondering what other moms do when
this happens. I've been giving him homeopathic Chestal cough syrup (honey based) but it doesn't seem to work well. This evening he started having sneeze and runny nose and I'm afraid he will have hard time sleeping from coughing.
Any home method that worked for you? What do you feed them? TIA

What can I do next?

I usually use a broth at this point, maybe with a few noodles. Use a bouillon cube or some chicken broth and throw in a few egg noodles. The liquid broth will help break up some of the congestion.

If you have a cool mist humidifier, that is also helpful.

Fluids. The more the better. If he will drink chiken soup, get him to drink that. Juice, water, whatever he will drink. Use a cool mist vapourizer to help with the cough.

My son, for the past week... has been sick with a terrible cold virus that of course affects everything respiratory.
HE did not have an appetite.
Fine.
He is sick.
But, I kept him well hydrated. Or made broths for him. Homemade. And smoothies.
I did take him to the Doctor. The Doctor said, to follow HIS cues. Which I always do anyway. Even when I am sick, I do not feel like eating.

But Hyland's makes a nice good honey cough syrup for kids.
I use that too.

You can also use kids Vicks. On his chest.

Your child, seems at the BEGINNING stages... of a cold.
My son had that same, thing.
Started with a sore throat, little coughs, lack of appetite, then mucus, more deeper coughing, runny nose, headache... and FEVERs. Everyday.
My Mom, had that same thing, too.
Head's up.
Its going around now... per our Pediatrician.

Colds run for about 7-10 days.
It is good you are taking him to the Doc tomorrow.
If he does not get better.... do a follow up appointment with the Pediatrician.
I was up with my son, every night, when he was in the throes of his cold, taking his temp, holding him when he was coughing a ton, and kept water by him to drink etc. keeping him upright etc.
Young children, cannot spit out their mucus... thus, you need to keep your child, hydrated, with water.
DO not use orange juice. When sick, orange juice makes mucus worse.

The no appetite is a clue to not eat much. Keep him hydrated with fruit juices, pop cycles, water.

Use a humidifier to help moisten his mucous.

Sounds like a cold coming on. Colds are viruses and there is nothing the doctor can do. I'd check with the advice nurse before taking him in.

Our pharmacist who has 5 kids always advised me to just give them Benadryl - it helps dry up the mucus and makes them sleepy so they can get rest and then their bodies can fight the cough or cold. Also lots of fluids like popsickles to soothe throats and hydrate at the same time. My kids always loved getting Vicks Vaporub rubbed on their chest and upper back and then covered with a t-shirt and then tucked in to get everything nice and warm. Breathing in the mentholated air coming off their chests seemed to help as well.
PS: Air-conditioning is very drying, so perhaps add a humidifier.

Food:
- Chicken Soup (just the liquid) in a sippy cup

- McDonalds (high fat, high protein, super processed so his body doesn't have to waste energy digesting. We're talking cheeseburgers or chicken nuggets, nothing with lettuce -hard to digest-, or whole grains, etc. McDonalds is unhealthy when we're well, but super health food when we're sick. The immune system relies very heavily on fats... antibodies are almost pure fat with just a little protein thrown in for structure. Our digestive system is the 2nd largest energy user -ratiocination being the first. Hence why those 2 things get 'shut off' when we're sick, to shunt energy over to the immune system.)

Meds... depends on the cough. Usually dextromethorphan & guaifenesin if I need an expectorant and a suppressant.

Popscicles, chicken soup, applesauce, jello, lots of water and natural fruit juices. Poor guy, hope he feels better soon! The Dr will likely prescribe an antibiotic and cough syrup.

Chicken soup simmered with a crushed garlic clove and lots of fluids. There's so little you can do about night coughing. A humidifier might help and honey. They do have special teas made just for kids that might help. You can find them at a natural food store...
Good luck~

Delsym Cough Syrup....works wonders as does Mucinex. Warm Vick's on chest, neck, back and soles of the feet. Cover each accordingly....socks, flannel sweatshirt. Under no circumstances is he to catch a draft or bathe after doing this. Give it 2 days. Lay him down 3/4 when going to sleep.
As for food, he will not be hungry, but you must keep fluids coming. Water, Gatorade, lemonade, oj, apple juice, as for food, chicken soup and toast.

I love Riley's answer. Seriously. Whenever I was sick when I was little (30 some years ago) my parents would go get my a Happy Meal. I don't think THEY understood the science behind it, but Riley explained it very well and I totally agree. I also go by the theory to let them eat whatever they WILL eat because it's temporary. Not saying feed them candy bars all day long, but you know what I mean. Ask him what he'd like, and give it to him.

And of course, plenty of liquids. :)
