What Are Your Baby's Favorite Books?

Hi. I read to my 9 mo. old daughter before bed every night and she's really into it, but there are only a few books from our library that she likes -- Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear, Brown Bear and sometimes the Very Hungry Caterpillar. I'm getting a little bored reading the same pages over and over again! She seems to prefer the books with the simple, bold illustrations and very few words...and I'd like to get a few new ones that she might like. What books were early favorites for your babies? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi J.!

My son loved (and still loves) books that make music. They have a ton at Target for $7.99. And an Elmo one I got at Babies R Us that also has a mirror on it. He LOVES it.

He also loved "touch" books; you know the ones that have different textures to touch and feel. He also likes "Chica Chica Boom Boom"; I think it's because it's more sing songy.

Also remember, babies love repetition! It's how they know the world is safe, and reliable. As old and tiring the same thing over and over is to us, it's safe, stable, and comforting for baby. I still read the same music book to my son now (almost 14 months) as I did when he was a few months old.

Happy reading!!

My daughter loves the Baby Donald Duck and baby Mickey and Minne books. There are only a few words on each page and big colorful pictures!

My daughter loves a book called "Moo Baa La La La" by Susan Boynton. It is short but she loves it.

There are so many great books, have you spoken with the Librarian? At 9 monts she just wants to hear your voice. "Chick a chicka boom boom" and "Chugga chugga chooc choo" allows for nice inflections in your voice. Look into the baby einstein books, donald crew and ? barton, eric carle and lois ehlert. don't stick with just night time books. If you live in the brecksville area our library is great and has a excellent selection of children books and a great story time program.

My daughters favorite book(and she's 13 months but we've been reading it since she was younger) is called Little Quacks Bedtime, by Lauren Thompson.

My son when he was younger LOVED Green Eggs and Ham!
