I would stick to money - our nanny has been with us for a half year, so I suspect we'll give her a week's pay.
I am returning full time teacher and have found a wonderful, terrific nanny. As the holidays approach, I am wondering what is reasonable and correct to give her. I have asked several people and here many varying answers. Should we give her the week off with pay, a nice gift and some money, or just extra money, and how much. We love our nanny, not only is she exceptional at taking care of our 2 children, but she also takes care of the house, which helps me a tremendous amount. I want her to feel appreciated and cared for. Any ideas? By the way as times are tough, my salary is decent but my husband is not doing so well in these economic times...

M.,
Cash is always great or as another poster said some paid time off is also a great idea!! I run a daycare center and believe me these women work so hard and really appreciate being appreciated. If money is tight a gift card to a fancy restaurant is nice and also something she may not have the money to treat herself to. I think any women appreciates a spa day especially when working with children they could use a little pampering themselves!!! Have a great holiday!!
I would say if she's been with your family for less than 6 months, 1/2 week's salary is sufficient, but if she's been with you for longer than that, a full week's salary or even more shows your appreciation. if that seems too steep, you might give her a bit less, and then offer her a few extra days off. good luck!
I second the money idea. It's a rough time for everyone, and if you can afford it- give her cash! She'll be so grateful! If you can't afford an extra week's salary (in addition to her regular paycheck), maybe your other idea-a paid week off?
