M.M.
My 2 and 4 yr olds chew it regularly.
It's like a treat to them.
The know not to swallow it.
We've had no issues.
My almost 5 year old is becoming interested in chewing gum, only because we were at a Home-Coming parade tonight and they tossed A LOT of candy, and of course she got some gum. So, at what age did you let your kids chew gum? What do you think is considered safe? TIA!

I was not thrilled about giving my DD chewing gum if only because I knew she would be asking for it all the time. The "toothfairy" gave her her first pack of sugarless gum. That is pretty much the only time she gets it now or for a very special treat.
I started giving my kids gum at age 3. At that age they knew not to swallow it
My oldest will be 5yo next month. I wasn't into him having gum. We went to an Easter Egg Hunt in March/April & I let them dig into their Easter Baskets on the way home. And he said, "Mommy, this piece of candy won't go away"...that's b/c it was gum =). I told him as long as he didn't swallow it, he could start chewing gum.
So he was hunt under 4 1/2yo.
My daughter started chewing gum over the summer - she's 4. She wanted a piece of mine - Trident, spearmint. She likes the taste and I figure it can't hurt to chew it after meals! We have strict rules about it - it stays in her mouth and if it comes out or she's touching it with her fingers it goes in the garbage. I don't let her go play or anything with it. She mainly only has it in the car actually.
My 4 year old loves to chew gum as a special treat. Her almost three year old brother insisted on trying it the other day, he swallowed it within a few minutes.
I gave my daughter her first piece around her 4th bday. She has always done well with it.
As soon as they're old enough to understand not to swallow it.
A 5 year old is plenty old enough to chew gum. I would make sure to make strict rules about it though since they are not going to be able to remember them very long. I made the kids sit down on the couch when they had gum so it would not get on the furniture and flooring.
I don't think at 5 years old it's a safety hazard. But I do think it's a messy hazard. My kids are 3 & 6, and they have both successfully chewed gum. It's a really big treat when I let them, because I am just not interested in finding it somewhere. I have enough messes to clean up already.
DD has been chewing sugar free gum since she was about two.
My daughters dentist said its fine, not all the time, to chew gum that is good for your teeth, like trident. She told me that kids can hurt their jaw if they chew it too often, but every once in a while can be beneficial to the teeth. Plus, no swallowing! Hope this helps :)
I think 5 sounds like a reasonable age. I think your daughter is or will be ready shortly, as long as she is respectful of the "rules." No swallowing, no taking out of her mouth etc. If she breaks the rules, then give it another year.
Mine were around 2, sure the occasional piece made it to the floor but they didn't get it often enough to be a real issue. by 3 they were masters.
5 is a great age..
I remember having gum in our daughters pinata fr her 5th birthday..
I'm pretty sure it is safe at 5. My kids weren't interested in gum until one of them had an ear infection and the doctor actually prescribed that he chew gum (as well as antibiotics) to help with the discomfort. The older one has a retainer now, so he can't chew it very often. I also read that it was a myth that it is dangerous to swallow gum, so you don't need to worry about that.
My son chews gum all the time, and he is 3. He does great with it.
We just never got into chewing gum.
Our son must have been about 6 when he tried it and he just didn't like it.
When it isn't swallowed, dropped, stuck on things or in hair, chomped, and in other words as long as you can keep it from her.
When they are old enough not to eat it. I have four kids and the ages of chewing varied from two to three years old.
