My daughter is 2 1/2, she will turn three in November. My sitter will give my daughter popcorn on occasion as a snack, I would have preferred to wait until she was three, we rarely give her popcorn at home and if we do we are to be sure it has popped and there aren't any hard kernel pieces still on it. As for carrots, she will eat them now and has never had a problem.
Hi S.,
I tend to follow the saying..... it's better to be safe than sorry with many issues with children. (This is one of those issues.) Therefore, that said, I did not let my children have popcorn until they were 3 and a half. However, I think I should of waited until after their 4th birthday. (I think this is what the American Pediatrics recommends.) I heard of children choking to death from popcorn, hard fruit chunks like apples, and raw veggies like celery and carrots. (Of course there are other foods like grapes, etc... too. ) So much for us moms to watch out for!
Take care, J.
It depends on how you serve them. Until the child is 4 to 5 I cut the carrots into long, thin strips. Popcorn I usually start around 3, but I also make sure all there are no kernals.
My daughter was 2 (she will be 3 in Oct.)when she had her first experience with popcorn (my husband's doing...I wasn't home). She did very well with it and has ever since. I taught her that the kernals are "hard yucky nuts" and she WILL NOT eat them...if she finds any (I try to make sure there aren't any), she will bring them to me and say "here mommy, it's a yucky nut" :) We have taught her to chew her food really good...and she knows when she takes a bigger bite than she should that she needs to be extra careful and chew really good...she tells us that "I've gotta chew really really good momma."
My oldest was 3.5 before she ate baby carrots and 4 before she ate popcorn. Now, my middle son was much younger, but he always wants to do what his big sister does. Also, he's a pretty careful chewer, so I am more comfortable with it. Also, when they are eating carrots or popcorn, I sit next to them and watch them chew :).
