What Age Did Your Child Get an Ipod Touch?

I had no idea how expensive these little electronics were. I am now shocked that so many of my son's friends have these things! Anyway, what age did your child want/get one of these devices. What do you like and not like about it? Thanks.

What can I do next?

My 10 year-old does not have any electronics, except a simple cell phone because we don't have a house phone. She has not been interested in getting any gaming or music devices, and that's a good thing, because I really can't see spending that kind of money.

My daughter got hers for Christmas when she was 9.
My son got a nano for Christmas at age 11 (the year daughter was 8). His nano was still working, but then died, so at the end of the school year, to celebrate extra effort showing on his report card, we paid a set amount towards a new device (he paid the rest), and he chose a touch also. So he has had his since he was 12 (almost 13).
He's 14 now and she is 11 and both of them still use theirs daily, and haven't had any issues with damage or batteries or anything.

I actually got one myself (Mother's Day) this past spring. I use it when I run. My kids face-time with friends after school. Send me texts on my phone. Lots of cool stuff they can do. But they can't buy anything without ME putting in a password they don't know.

And yeah... not cheap. The newer ones are even more not cheap. We picked up all 3 of ours (at different times) for around $180 --- not the high memory ones. My son wishes he had more memory, but daughter and I have no issues with the amount of memory we have.

Oh, and my son (9th grade) is allowed to use his in his Literature class at school. He has taken pictures of pages he needed to study instead of having to handwrite it on paper, and he is allowed to use it to read downloaded books also.
We were running late this morning, and we were ALL a bit irritable as they piled out of the car to get on the bus. I sent him a text telling him I loved him. He got it when he got off the bus at school (wi-fi access) and texted me back that he loved me, too. That was worth all it cost in gold, to me. There is no access fee like with a phone. They don't have phones. But anywhere there is wi-fi, he can text. They text with extended family and send pictures to them, etc. They take videos. It really is kinda neat what all they figure out how to do with them. And they both have docking/charging/speaker stations in their rooms, so they can listen to music as they go to sleep, and it's charged and ready to go in the morning.

I was leary at first. But as another mom mentioned... it is a great thing to be able to take away, when you need a quick removal of privileges for some reason.

They both have protective cases... they bought those themselves. I have a Frogz case on mine, and my son decided he liked it, so he got one for himself also. They watch movies at the orthodontists office. Netflix when they are waiting on each other's karate classes. It's a pretty sweet little gadget.

Yikes! My daughter got hers when she had the money to pay for it. My son still doesn't have one....maybe he is waiting for his wife to buy it for him!

Seriously, I never purchased "luxuries" for my children, I used it as a motivator for them to work and earn the money to buy them for themselves.

An indulgent uncle bought them for my girls when they were 4 and 7. I thought, "these will last a month," but no, my kids are now 7 and 10, and the iPods are still going strong! They are more sturdy than they look. I have zero complaints; my kids have a million apps, all their music, movies, tv shows, etc on there. They facetime with their grandparents (who live 2 states away), and the indulgent uncle (who lives in Canada). It makes a great thing to take away when you need to enforce punishment for the child's latest dastardly deed... I'm a fan of the iPod touch.

ETA: Also, both iPods are under my iTunes account, so only I can download new apps, movies, music, etc. They don't know my iTunes password. :)

My daughter got one for her last birthday, when she turned 8. I got tired of buying small gifts, and some not so small, that were rarely played with or were junk, or whatever. It made more sense to get one larger gift that will last for years.

If she wants to buy music or games, she has to buy her own itunes card. And it's been a great lesson for her too. After she loaded her first card and downloaded games, she was accidently "buying" credits from some of the games and used her money without her realizing what had happened. We removed those games and now she is much more cautious with how she uses the ipod.

My son got a hand me down iPod as a toddler.

Aka : Free.

Sure, I suppose one can buy newest and new for their kids. In my house, things get handed down as we upgrade, or 'new' is previous gen at rock bottom prices (like $1 - $50).

Just because its tech doesn't mean it cost hundreds.

Hint: any old iPhone from the padt 5 years works as an iPod touch. Once its disconnected (or never connected).

My son is 11 and shares mine but he REALLY wants his own. He wants it badly enough that he says if he doesn't get it for Christmas he'll save up and buy his own. I've been kind of wondering if he's ready (if *I'm ready) for him to have his own. Maybe by the time he's saved enough, I'll be ready. :)
Anyway, I think as long as it needs me to input a password every time he wants to download something, then it will probably turn out ok. (As long as he remembers that mom has the right monitor his usage and tell him to turn it off and do his homework! :)

My daughter got one from her Dad (my ex) last Christmas. She was 9. I think it's a cool little gadget. She can facetime with her dad on it. And at one point it was setup for texting - so she could text me when she was over there. She hasn't brought it over here in a while so I'm not sure how much she even uses it anymore.

My daughter, who is 6 and in first grade, has been asking for an iPod to listen to her music. Since my husband and I both just upgraded our phones to the new iPhone, we've decided to get new cases for our old phones and give them to the kids as an iPod touch. The ONLY reason they are getting them is because we already own them. There is no way I would spend hundreds of dollars on one to give her otherwise. They got the VTech Innotabs last year. They like those.

My daughter got one for her 10th birthday. We got her a refurbished one or she never would have gotten one! It was all she got for her birthday.

She's taken pretty good care of it. The screen has scratches, even though we told her to keep it in the case. She peeled off the film that protected it. She doesn't keep it in the case.

I wish I had waited, but she has it now and she does love it and use it. I just wish she took better care of her things.

Hers doesn't have a camera, and I told her she'd have to save up her money to buy another one!

My son got his from Grandma for his tenth birthday. I bought him the docking station to go with it. He has had to save up to buy his own itunes cards so he can download music and games. It is set up so that I have to approve all his downloads. He doesn't have a case for it so he doesn't take it out of the house. He has a ds he can take out of the house. It's less valuable.

Around age 10. Both my kids have one and watch netflix and youtube on it and listen to music of course. I want a Samsung Galaxy MP3 player which is the non-apple version of the same thing, just a bit bigger (5" screen) and cheaper ($199) and has the ability to take an SD card for more memory.

When our kids want big ticket items, they have to save up and by them on their own. They saved and bought DSI's about 2 or three years ago, and this year my 11 year old son bought an ipod touch and my 9 year old daughter bought a Samsung tablet. They save the majority and if they have gift cards we will "buy" them from them. My husband and I find if they have to buy these items themselves they seem to take better care of them.

Phew! I'm glad a couple other mama's are on the same page as us! My girl is almost 4 and her dad got her one a few months ago! He bought it used, though, so it was "only" $50 (and came with a $30 iTunes card--which we used). It is set to not access internet at all--so she can only play the games that I put on it. We also put movies on there for her to watch in the evening (when we're watching our shows on the TV). It is a motivator--if she acts up during the day or has potty accidents she isn't allowed to use it for the rest of the day. She has been playing on our iPhones and iPad since she was about 1.5 (under very close supervision). Even with "her" iPod, she has to be sitting or laying (on the couch or in our bed--not in her bed) to use it. It doesn't leave the house unless we're going for a long car ride and we want the distraction. She doesn't get free access to it, either. We keep it put away and she has to ask to play on it or watch a movie. We are a "techie" family, so I figure it's just an extension of that.
I think it is a family-specific decision, and I don't think kids should grow up just "expecting" to get these kinds of things. My younger sister is like that and it frustrates me! So, I will provide for my daughter and she will EARN special things that she wants.

My kids study, play WII, play a few games in the Computer (not many...) but they mostly play outside and do sports weather permitting, and when is too cold or too hot, they just play in a gym or recreation center.....I am sorry, it is just I don't see a need for these.
Do they actually need these things????

I got the boys iPod Touches for Chistmas last year. They were 9 and 10 years old. They had both had regular iPod Nanos and had taken good care of them.

I bought them with Otterbox Defender cases and gave them strict instructions not to take them out (I'd take them away if they did). They are seriously the best gift I've ever purchased.

Unlike a Nintendo DS (which, with a case and accessories, costs about the same amount), the games for the iPod Touch are SO cheap (and often free!). There are also learning apps, Kindle app, Netflix, Pandora Radio, the weather...basically everything you have on your iPhone except cell phone calling. They can even iMessage you if you have an iPhone (which is just texting). And it has Facetime, which was wonderful while I was away at a military school for 2 months. The possibilities are really endless.

It's nearly every electronic kid's device rolled into one. And it's worth every penny.
