Hi! I recently quit breastfeeding and my appeitie has increased instead of decreased! I'm eating way more than I normally do even with breastfeeding and I'm gaining weight with it. Which tells me that my body doesn't need the extra, but I feel so hungry and it's not just a habit thing. Has anyone experienced this? I loss weight when I weaned my older daughter so this doesn't make sense to me to be more hungry, and no, I'm not pregant again! LOL!! There are certain actions you have to do to get that way....I might have even forgotten what they were....

What can I do next?

please consider having your thyroid tested. Last year, I lost 24 lbs....& put it all back on in the last 3 months. When I went in for my checkup, my dr took one look at my face & said, "why is your face puffy...not swollen, but soft & puffy?" End result: my blood test showed that I had flunked the thyroid test! I can't wait for my new med to kick in (it takes months to balance out)...so I can work on eliminating that weight gain!

I second the last woman's advice - it isn't always about how much you eat, but what you're eating. Proteins (meats) can take longer to digest, making you feel fuller longer. I grab a protein bar for an afternoon snack (Zone Perfect is my favorite brand because they aren't chalky or taste like vitamins) - plus they're coated in chocolate so I get my sweet fix.

My husband makes a big deal about eating anything after 7 pm because your metabolism starts to slow way down in the evening. If I feel hungry after a meal, I usually drink a glass of milk or water. Within 5 minutes, I don't feel hungry anymore. A lot of times I think it's in my head!

My appetite did not decrease right away after quitting breastfeeding either, but slow but sure it will. I also found that with your hands full with baby, and other kids, it was hard to eat the right things. Be sure what you are eating are full of fiber, protein, etc. so that you will actually feel full. Once I did that, the appetite got under control. Good Luck!

This happened with one of my kiddos too but after a few weeks my appetite was back to normal and the weight dropped pretty quickly, maybe your reserves are trying to play catch-up?? Try to eat plenty of fruits and veggies and see how it goes if your still concerned I would check with your doctor or a nutritionist?
