My son is now 6 months old. When he was born he weigh 8lbs 1oz in Aug. In Nov he weigh 11lbs 2oz. At the end of Jan he was 11lbs 14oz. We just went to the dr ( three weeks later and he is 2ozs lighter. They have started taking blood work because they are not sure what is going on. He is bottle fed, getting 8oz 6 times a day and some baby food. No major spit up or diarrhea. I was just wondering if anyone had gone through this. Or has any ideas what is going on. They want to make sure now that I am feeiding him baby food three times a day with his bottles. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

So What Happened?

Holly D V -- There is no diarrhea and when I say no major spit up I mean that once and a while he will spit up a little but it is not alot. I already talked to my doctor about him spitting up a little every once and a while, but you know it is not a whole bottle in him.

The blood work came out fine. He is not anemic, no sugar in the blood and kidneys look fine. So now the doctor wants to do a sonogram of his stomach to make sure that a muscle is not enlarge.

Hi there,

Sorry you're going through this...our baby has definitely dipped in weight. She's 6.5 months old...weighed 7.6 at birth, and 12.8 at almost 5 months...but only 13.8 at her 6 month check up...I freaked out. They don't want to take blood or anything...they're just doing weight checks periodically...why do they want to take blood so quickly without waiting it out a little more?

It is good to check and if your doctor feels that is necessary then that is good to rule things out. I just wanted to say to remember that averages are just that and some people fall above and some below and if he is thriving and seems happy overall and is eating I wouldn't worry too much about it. He might have a higher metabolism, he might be more active as another poster said and be burning more calories...It's hard not to worry as a mom but try not to stress out about it and when you get the results back from your doctor you can go from there. Best of luck.

I have no advice, it sounds like your baby is eating normally and I agree that the doctor should look into this matter and run some tests. At six months, a baby should have doubled their birth weight, so your son should be close to 16 pounds and you're saying he's less than 12 pounds. This is quite different than the poster who gave birth to a 7 lb baby and says her baby is 13 1/2 pounds at 6 months, she is close to doubling. Your baby is not close to this and I feel that your doctor is doing the right thing. Good luck

My pedi said that at that age you can see a dip in the growth curve since they are generally more active and mobile. Is he moving around more now recently?

I think your dr's are doing a good job. When my son was born, he was in the 95% and when we was weaned at 17 mths old...he was in the 5%. and now he's 20 mths old...and as far as we know he still hasn't gained or lost anything.
He was having diarrhea-like stools. But I was figuring it was just because he was breastfed. but they should have firmed up when he started solid foods more...but they really didn't. But the thing that concerned my doctor for Danny was because of his slow downward trend on his weight scale percentage. That can mean that there's something wrong going on in their system.

Our doctor also ordered blood work for him...and stool samples. They checked for possible allergies and Celiac. I requested Celiac testing based on what I read online and how it can affect their digestive systems. It seemed to fit for him. A couple tests I got back are: IgA deficient and IgG came back saying possible Celiac. This Wednesday he does to see a GI doctor for more testing.

I'm curious what you mean by no major spit up or diarrhea. If you notice any spit up or any soft messy like stools they are worth speaking about to your doctor. Especially since your baby is not on breastmilk and also eating any solid foods. It's possible your little one may be sensitive or allergic to milk. In the blood tests they can tell if your little one has sensitivities or allergic to different foods...including diary. I was told my little one is at least sensitive to milk.

Dear J.,
If your baby is eating well and seems to be in good spirits I would not worry about it, specially when the doctor is running tests to check. At least your doctor is doing something. But you also have to take into consideration your and your husband's size. If you guys are petite then you could expect that your son will be petite aswell. I pray that it all works out for you guys. At least you and your doctor are doing what you need to do on your behalf. Be blessed.
I.
