Weight Gain During Pregnancy - Bloomington,IL

So i used to be slender before this pregnancy. I am 5'7" and my weight was around 130 lbs.
I gained a lot of weight right around the time i got pregnant because my husband and i were eating out a lot. Now I'm 30 weeks pregnant and at my appt this week i weighed in at 186 lbs.

I'm really concerned about not being able to lose all the weight after the baby, and i really want to get back in shape once he's born.
Any advice or similar stories would help ...
Thanks!

I went from 140 to 210 with my first (and only) pregnancy, and I lost all of the weight within the first couple of months. (well, I didnt eat much after I failed at breastfeeding, more worried about the baby than me) I still have a jiggly belly, but that doesnt bother me.

Well, I have the same exact stats as you and gained about 60 lbs with my first pregnancy. I have 10 remaining pounds that have stuck around for 10 years now and don't seem to want to go anywhere. My thought is that it is where I am really supposed to be and that the 125-130 lbs that I used to weigh before kids was more indicative of my lifestyle-working and partying and nothing in the fridge but white wine plus skipping dinner rather than cooking!

For me, lots of weight came off at first. Within about a month I want to say I was down to 150. Then ten more pounds came off-but slower. Probably 6 months. I do have to say that gaining that much weight was terrible for my body and I did not do it again with my second. I developed plantar fascitis and lots of sore joints that were very painful and took some time to get better. I think it was just the putting SO much extra weight on my frame. I gained about 35 with my second and didn't have a single problem like that.

I would recommend to start walking now at least 30 minutes a day. It will help with maintaining a healthy weight and increase your stamina for your delivery. Don't wait until he is born, start walking now and stay healthy.

Well, don't beat yourself up too much and PLEASE don't let the want to lose your baby weight get in the way of your "falling in love" with the whole newborn situation...so sweet. I would say that the only thing I contribute rapid weight loss to after my children were born was breastfeeding-WOW! I didn't even try and lbs. flew off. I once lost 6 lbs. in a week without even thinking of it. You move so quickly to meet the baby’s needs that you will have to remind yourself to eat.

I don't think it matters how much you gain during pregnancy as long as you're being health conscious. You'll lose the weight as long as you're committed to exercising and eating healthy after the baby. Don't stress your weight - your doc will tell you if it's too much. You can ask him/her if you're concerned.

Congrats on your spring baby!!!

Hi B.,

The right multivitamin (one that is guaranteed to absorb) will give you the nutrition you need and your body will reject the extra weight. One reason we gain so much weight when we eat out is that restaurants primarily serve only overly processed foods. The extra synthetic chemicals in these foods react with our normal body chemistry and everything goes haywire. It's harder to undo, than it is to do....You can attribute a lot to calories and extra fat but the real culprit is the processing.

Does your prenatal have documentation that it absorbs? Doctors use what the pharmaceutical reps tell them is good and sometimes we don't get the ideal nutrition. I can recommend one if you like but please check into that. Also some vitamins create extra free radical activity so you need mega doses of antioxidants to contradict the bad effects.

Just FYI, It's not a bad thing to lose weight when your pregnant as long as the baby is really getting the nutrition he needs.

Hope this info helps. Congratulations on your little one!

M.

I am 5'4" and broke 200 with both my kids (starting at around 135....) a lot of the weight at the end was fluid, and I lost like 7 pounds a day of fluid in the first few days after delivery...and within a year was close to my original weight with both kids....I do have to focus to lose the last 10 pounds, but the rest just seems to come off...I think breastfeeding helped me lose the weight, too. I would stress about it....I ate because I was nauseous..and my doctor said do what it takes to feel good...and all turned out just fine!

I gained 50lbs (which was 50% of my pre-pregnancy weight) with my first daughter and I am five foot nothing! I breastfed and all the weight came off without trying within 6 months. As an FYI, I walked 30-45 minutes a day during and after my pregnancy and generally try to eat pretty healthy. Almost everyone I know gained 50-60lbs while pregnant.

I gained 50 lbs. w/ my first and lost it all by the time my baby was 8 months old. I lost 20 lbs on the table right after he was born.

This is what I was always told about weight gain and loss w/ pregnancy - 9 months up and 9 months down.

Most people are only pregnant for short periods in life. Enjoy it. The weight comes off eventually, and that first year you've got spit up and who knows what else on you all the time anyway, so you kind of stop caring so much what you look like for a little while. That gives you time to get back in shape. And for what it's worth, don't worry about having a big baby. I'm only 5'3" and my first was 10lbs born in a hospital with an epidural, second was 9lbs 2oz born at home completely naturally. If your body made that baby your body can get that baby out. Big babies are healthy, happy babies ;)

i gained 50 with my first and lost all but 15 of it w/o trying in a year or so and then got pregnant again and gained 60 with that one. i've lost all but the same 15lbs again. starting last year (when my youngest was 3 i joined sparkpeople.com (it's free and like weight watchers minus the points) and i lost about 20lbs in 3mos. i could have lost more but i am a huge chocolate eater. i would say that your battle is going to be watch what you eat after the baby is born. it'll be easy to exercise since the baby will be sleeping a lot, but eating is another matter. it's much easier to grab and go and most of that food is junk.

Hi B.~
I was the same size as you before I had my 3rd baby...5'7", and about 135lbs. I got up to 185 when my baby girl was born. She is now 8mos old, and I've dropped down to about 150...and have been since she was 6months old! Now I know its not the 135 I was at before, but it's acceptable! I'm nursing exclusively, so I really can't diet, or cut calories, so I'm guessing I'll probably be steadily at this weight til done nursing. My only suggestion is to just watch what you eat after your little one is born. I run a home daycare, so I work a good 12hrs a day, which leaves very little room for an actual workout program, so I've lost the weight by minimizing my snacking, increasing my water & just trying to be allover healthier. Not sure if its your first baby, but like they all say...it took 9months to put the weight on, and it will take AT LEAST that long to lose it all!! But, don't be too worried; in my experience with all 3 of mine, it comes off, just takes time!
Oh, and my 8yr old was born in April, so it was much easier & quicker for me to lose that weight because it was summer time and I was more active afterwards!
Congrats on the baby!

Well with my daughter I weighted almost 200 pounds (198) and I am 4'11" so I was really overweight, and I didn't have the chance to loose it all since I got pregnant with #2 pretty soon after that (my daughter was 7 months) but I managed to get my weight down to 130, so for me that was still pretty good.
In my case a lot of my weight was from water retention, and the rest I lost it by counting calories, breastfeeding and drinking only water (no sodas, no coffee, no juices). I am now almost 38 weeks and I weight 167, so it's still a lot for being so short but I am sure that it will come off after baby#2 is born.
Even though you are pregnant and you are not supposed to diet you can always cut on sodas and white bread and pasta. I am sure the baby doesn't need it, you are better off with the whole grain versions and if you drink water it would be great for both of you, so you can still make healthy choices for the rest of the pregnancy without really dieting. That's what I started doing a few months ago, otherwise I would be close to the 200 pounds again.

I am petite - 5'4" 120 when I'm not pregnant. I gained 40 lbs with my first two pregnancies and am on the same track with this one.

I lost it all after my first, lost all but 5 lbs after my second. In my experience, the first 25-30 lbs literally fell off, w/o me doing much at all. It is those last 10 pounds that are a killer!!

Just so you know, your body will definitely be different after you have the baby. I'm not saying worse, just different. For example - after my first I was down to my prepregnancy weight, but some of my clothes just didn't fit the same. For me, my hips are a little wider now, they just never went back. And my tummy - well, lets just say that "muffin top" is a compliment!! I have to say though, that I never really gave myself or my body a chance to get back to normal. I was only not pregnant for 9 months after both of my kids before I got preggo again. So I'm sure if I really work on it and give it some time, things will go back (I have to tell myself that!!!!!!)

Don't stress too much about it. There isn't anything you can do about it now. Just concentrate on that perfect little miracle you are making!

I can RELATE. Like the other posts say, drink lots of water, especially if you breastfeed, and relax and enjoy that new baby. Have a stroller ready, preferably one that's easy to put baby's car seat into, and start walking with baby as soon as you're ready. Baby can be bundled up and taken out even when it's still a little cool out, and it really makes you feel better. You can do it in your neighborhood, at the park, local track, etc... find a place you enjoy. Eventually you can try incorporating a little jogging into the walk to get your heartrate up higher for some quick "intervals". Baby will keep you pretty busy for a while though, so go easy on yourself and take care!

I didn't read all the previous answers but a few of the most current ones. I completely agree - don't worry too much about it. If you just be careful about what you're eating and not necessarily the amount of weight, you should be fine. Of course, if you have any medical conditions, you might run it by your doctor just to make sure. but, really, just enjoy your last few weeks of pregnancy! baby will be here soon and you won't even want to think about weight because you'll be so busy enjoying Baby!
And congratulations!
