Weight Gain and Changes AFTER Baby

My third baby is 4-months-old. I started losing weight really well after he was born and only had 8 pounds to go 2 weeks after he was born. Since then, the weight has been coming back on with a vengeance! Now I have 20 pounds to lose to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. It's really frustrating! I was a comfortable size 10 before baby, a 12 two weeks after, and now I'm a 14. I have a healthy, balanced diet and exercise regularly. With two older kids I don't have time to just sit around until after they all go to bed at night, so I'm burning calories throughout the entire day. I don't know what's going on.
I had a D&C 2 1/2 weeks after I delivered. Could this have anything to do with it? Why else would I be putting weight on like this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have been suspecting my thyroid for a few years now since my mom and sister have hypothyroidism and I have MANY of the symptoms- even some more obscure ones- but the doctors keep telling me my levels are fine. I'm going to try and make an appointment to see an endocrinologist to figure out what in the world is going on. Thanks for your help, mamas!

BTW- The D&C was remove a leftover remnant of placenta that was causing me to hemorrhage (that's a whole other story but the problems did start shortly after the D&C). I am most definitely NOT pregnant, but the thought did cross my mind. =)

Hormones, Hormones, Hormones... I agree. This sounds like some sort of an imbalance. Also, don't stop until you get someone to listen to you.

After I had my daughter, I was having trouble with a host of different things including my weight, sleep issues etc and I was told that it was post partum for nearly 1 year.

Finally after refusing that response (I knew better) I got them to run more extensive blood tests and found that my hormones were completely off and I was suffering from an Auto-Immune disorder.

Good Luck!

Have your thyroid tested. Your thyroid can go "nuts" after pregnancy! Good luck.

Sometimes pregnancy can have an effect on the thyroid gland. You may need to go get your TSH levels checked. If you don't have enough of the hormone it secretes, you will gain weight among some other things. Good Luck hun.

I agree with having your thyroid checked. I had an issue after my son was born and was told that it is common in woman after pregnancy.

Good Luck.

Get your thyroid tested, and not just the "normal" test they do. This is exactly what happened to me, and I packed on a good 45 pounds after my third. The original test came back within normal range, but after talking to a different doctor (who actually listened to me), she ran a more in-depth test, and sure enough, my thyroid levels were off.

I too would suggest hormones, though if you haven't noticed it with your other two, I'm not as sure. I'll also mention that I gained major weight--30 pounds with my first, 20 and counting with #2--when I weaned them from breastfeeding. I didn't change my eating, but my appetite sure didn't lessen even though my caloric needs did--something I attribute at least partially to hormones (and somewhat to enjoying food).

Hi C.,

If there are no obvious reasons like diet and exercise I would suggest that you get your thyroid tested. An underactive thyroid will make you gain weight. I don't think the D&C would trigger weight gain. I have an overactive thyroid that was diagnosed after the birth of my second child. Some times for women they have problems with the thyroid after having a baby. Good luck. I hope you can get to the bottom of the weight gain.
