Hello, My husband and I are building a house, so we're tight on money, but we'd like to take our boys on a small, affordable but fun weekend vacation before school (kindergarten for my oldest) starts. We live in the Dallas area and are willing to drive 3-5 hours. My boys are 3 and 5. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I am looking for the same thing! Just a quick get-away for a couple of days. My thinking is that I really want to get out of this heat!!!!! When you decide let me know!

Try Glen Rose: awesome Dinosaur Park, and other fun activities. My kids love it, but I have to wait on it to cool off!

Sea World San Antonio or just stay at the Hyatt Hill Country there. It has a lazy river (walkable for adults) that goes all around the hotel and you can lolly gag in there for hours with the kids hopping around. It's lots of fun. I kept my youngest by me in an inner tube.

We took my 3 year old camping in Arkansas in May. She LOVED it. Lots of great state parks there, and who doesn't like bugs, fire, and hikes? lol

Granbury is fantastic. A night at the Hilton Garden Inn there is relatively cheap, and you can walk across the hotel parking lot to the public city beach. The beach is very clean and family-friendly. The hotel also has an indoor pool if the heat gets to be too much. Nearby in Glen Rose is Fossil Rim wildlife center. It's a huge drive-through safari-type thing where you can feed the animals. Imagine your boys feeding a giraffe or petting a zebra from the car. My family loves the Granbury area.

When I was little my parents always took us on a vacation even if it was just to Six Flags, which that was still always a fun time for all of us... You could also take them to Galveston and have fun at the beach for the weekend...

We just got back from Houston/Galveston. I grew up in San Diego so I was a little skeptical about the beaches in Galveston, but they were a lot nicer than I'd heard! My kids had so much fun! We packed a picnic basket and spent an entire afternoon at Stewart Beach. We also went to NASA which we all enjoyed. There's also Moody Gardens and Splash Town in the Houston area. Hope you have a fun vacation!
