Good Morning,
I have a question for all of you former breast feeding mommy's. I have a 7 months old little girl and we unfortunately had to wean last month as my supply was down after RSV and she had lost SO MUCH weight and wasn't sleeping well and anyway, when should I expect to get my first period? I work and pumped twice a day before weaning and never gave her a bottle while she was with me and we haven't nursed at all in 3 weeks and for a week and half before that only once or twice a night, so i am concerned about no AF yet. I have taken a pregnancy test last week and it was negative. Help! I go to a new GYN next Monday...

What can I do next?

Well after I had my son I got on birth control. I had my period every month, but then after 4 months i stopped taking the birthcontrol because it was making me moody and i never remembered to take it. When i stopped taking it i didnt have a period for 3 months. Then it started back and ive had a period every month since then. I weaned at 13 months. So I only went 3 months without a period. I think it depends on the person really.

It took about 2mo after I started weaning all three of my boys to get my first AF. It might take longer since your baby is still so young. If you are concerned, it might not be a bad idea to make an appointment for your annual well woman exam. HTH!

The period can happen whenever it wants! It takes a while to get regulated. It's almost comparable to when you first start menstruating. I wouldn't worry. Unless your planning to get pregnant, I would look into some birth control, though. Incidentally, I got pregnant with my 3rd while exclusively breastfeeding my 2nd AND before I ever started a period AND I was on Depo.Go figure!

I breastfed for 7 months. I started transitioning to formula a couple of months before and made the transition very slow. My milk was completely dried up somewhere between 7-8 months. It was about a month after it was completely gone that I had my first period. My hormones were going crazy at that time as my body was going through a transition. They were crazy until I got back on birth control, thank goodness! It is great timing that you are about to see your OB.

It took 3 months for me to re-start after my first child weaned at 12 months. The OB told me that's normal. Good luck!

I didn't get a period until my son was 10 months old, and I was still nursing. I wouldn't get concerned for another couple of months. It can take awhile for your hormones to get back to normal. Some people get their periods right away after birth, even if they are breastfeeding. It just depends on your body. Good luck!

Sorry for the late response. I weaned my daughter at 9 months, and it took me awhile to get AF as well. I think it was between 1-2 months after weaning. I had asked a nurse practitioner about it in passing, and she said don't worry, but ask my OB if 3 months go by. What'd your GYN say?

I have breastfed all 4 of my kids for at least 9 months (the last one I nursed until 13 months). It took at least 6 weeks after weening each of them before my period came back. Seems like the longer you exclusively breastfeed, the longer it takes to get back on track. Each woman is different so you should talk to your OB/GYN if you're concerned. But honestly it doesn't sound like anything thats a big deal. Try not to stress over it. :-)

Hi S.,

I think every woman is different. I stopped nursing my son at 15 months, but my period returned after nursing him for 12 months. I haven't had my first period since weaning him, but expecting it any day. I think it's pretty normal for things to be out of whack after weaning and I would just ask your new GYN when you might expect it. Good luck!

It only took me 6 days for me to get my period after I stopped nursing. But, my son was only nursing once a day at the point, so that might be why it came back so quickly. I had only nursed him before bed for about 2 months. Based on the other responses it doesn't sound like anything you need to worry about though. I'm sure your new obgyn will be able to tell you more. =)
