Weaning 11 Month Old off Bottle

Hello,

We are starting the process of weaning our 11 month little girl off the bottle. We are down to a bottle at night and 'maybe' one bottle in the a.m. depending on what time she wakes up. If she wakes up early (5:30) we'll give her a bottle and she goes back to sleep until about 8. If she wakes up closer to 7 it's formula in a sippy cup. She drinks out of a sippy cup all other times. She's trying to get her to drink out of a real cup...water only. What a mess :o)

Now, at what age do we cut out the before bed bottle?

What can I do next?

Whenever YOU and the baby are ready!! My girl is 18 months and still gets a bottle with water at bedtime and during the night. Now you can get her off of it but be prepared for the screams... Personally I like the peace!! My daughter wont do a sippy cup and only drinks from straw cups... that may help with the mess if you get those toddler straw cups... My boys were both over 2 before we stopped tbe bottle at bedtime. You can always give it a try and see how it will be. Good Luck

HI L.,

My daughter will turn one next week and we just cut out the bedtime bottle (the last one we had to go). For us, she was eating really well at meals, so I thought she didn't need the nutrition, it was more habit. I have replaced the bottle with a consistent book and she seems good. I think she was a little surprised that first night, but since then she had been grabbing the books and bringing them to me. Then we say good night. I do think it is a personal thing. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I'm on child #3 and with all I stopped the bottle at their 1st birthday, cold turkey. I never had a problem or battle. In my opinion it's the easiest way. After she turns a year give her whole milk in a sippy cup or real cup at night and in the morning when she wakes up. Good Luck!

I agree with Sunni. At one year, just give up the bottle. Really there is no reason to wean. My daughter put up a good fight and went on a liquid strike for about 8-9hours from the time she awoke. I only offered her sippy cups though and eventually she was thirsty and drank. It was a rough day, but then it was over and the bottles have never been heard from again. Dragging it out is just confusing to the child.
