Hi, I'm brand new here. My name is M. and I'm a SAHM to Seth, who is 17 months old. My husband and I are going to be moving to Louisville the first week in May. We know nothing about the area. Our realtor isn't very helpful, so I was hoping to get some help from real moms in the area! My husband's office is on the eastern side of Louisville on Shelbyville Rd. We would love to live in a family friendly neighborhood that is near good schools. From your expierience, what are the good schools? Is there an area that we should stay away from? Any info would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

****Edit****Our price range is $175-240,000. Our realtor has only sent us listings that are for $250,000 and above....um, yeah, thanks! We would like to live somewhere that is away from the hustle and bustle. We live in the city right now on a major road and we really don't like it very much. We would love a fenced in back yard with trees. My husband and I are in our twenties. We would love to find a neighborhood that has some small children for Seth. Thanks again!

What can I do next?

We live in the St.Matthews area right off Brownsboro Road off I-264, it is the exit right after Shelbyville Road, I can be there in 2 minutes. I have a 16 mos and nearly 4 year old and we love the neighborhood feel and being in the city but not feeling in the city with good sized yards. We are two blocks from Dunn Elementary which is one of the better schools. You can't go wrong in this area.

What is it you want out of where you are living? About how old are you and your husband? And what price range will you be looking in? WE live in the Highlands; it is closer to downtown and we love it. WE can walk to shopping, restaurants, the grocery, the farmers market but it isn't a neighborhood. The area is set up more like the ciy -- lots of homes close together, mostly street parking with garages here and there but usually not attached, smaller yards so it is maybe a bit more difficult to find families, but the Highlands is close to one really nice big park which is a perk! Good luck!

M., Good luck with everything. I have lived in Louisville for about 3 years now and have lived in quite a few places. We finally decided to settle in Oldham County (Pewee Valley specifically). The public schools there are some of the best in the Tri-state area and it is outside of the city limits but not far at all (it takes me 12 minutes to get to Shelbyville Rd). If you decide to look into Oldham Co. and want to stay closer to Louisville be sure to look south of I-71.

You might consider St Regis Park area? off Browns Lane ... it is located in St Matthews and is central to all parts of town, near wonderful parks, shopping malls, restaurants, etc.

Good luck! I'm sure relocating is stressful ...

You should call my realtor - he's lived here his whole life and knows the area well. Ray Carter ###-###-####. He really helped me to decide what area I wanted to live because he could speak to different areas in terms of schools and reputations and he really knows his stuff. Welcome to Louisville!

Hi! Your request caught my eye because we too had to relocate to the area from MI 5 years ago. We didn't know the area at all and had about a week to find an apartment or house...yikes!! It was a little overwhelming to say the least. However, we love the area now. To give you a couple of recommendations...a lot of people like the St. Mathews area it has older homes, smaller yards, houses are closer together, but it is close to everything. A lot of people also like Oldham county. It is more North of Louisville. Maybe about 15-20 min from major shopping malls, the zoo, etc. There is also Shelby county which is up and coming. Seems like they are building a lot out that way. An area that is close to the city, again about 20-25 min from major shopping malls, the zoo, etc. and about 30 min or so from downtown. There are more horse farms in the area. It is kind of like country living, but still close enough to the city. Anyway, that is just a little info. We have a 17mo old daughter so we are always going to the mall, zoo, My Gym...places for her to explore. :) Good luck with the move!

Hi M.,

I currently live in the Highlands area (40204-40205 zip code). It can be expensive and the yards are small but it is a neat part of town with small shops and great restaurants. You would probably be more interested in the Crescent Hill and St. Matthews areas (I think the zip code is 40207-40209). Be sure to stay away from anything west of I-65 and south of I-264. Anything east of I-64 is pretty desirable, but expensive. There is an area on Southern Parkway that is becoming the "new Highlands", but I don't think the schools are that great yet. It would be an area to buy cheap now, but sell and make money later.

Let me know if you have any questions,
K.

Hi M.,

I really like Graymoor-Devondale on Herr Lane off Westport Rd. Norton Elementary is a terrific school and with in walking distance of most homes in this neighborhood. There is also Kammerer Middle and Ballard HS right there. They are some of the best schools in the city. If your're Catholic there is a very nice K-8 school called St. Alberts there too.

My husband and I grew up in that neighborhood and walked to school everyday. There are a wide variety of house styles, prices and sizes in that one area. It's really close to some great shopping but none of the houses are on the main roads. The neignhors are friendly, educated and diverse.

There is also the Chamberlane Lane area further down Westport Rd. The neighborhood is really diverse and nice. Norton Elementary is great but the middle and high schools aren't as good. However, there is a wonderful magnet program in the city that let's you have some choices outside your district. It also has some good shopping. It's further out of the city but right next to two major expressways for easy access to downtown. I lived out there until I was 12 and my husbands parents live there now.

Pretty much any where along Westport Rd or HWY 22 East of St. Matthews is nice and affordable. Stay out of St. Matthews because the homes are over priced and have flooding and plumbing problems. Plus, the traffic is terrible. It's kind of uppity. It's the classiest town in the state of Kentucky and two gubernatorial candidates live there. We go there for the shopping and dinning but it's nice to live somewhere else.

We actually live in Jeffersonville, IN now because my husband works here. It's very inexpensive but we're 5 minutes from downtown and once the bridge is finished we'll be 10 minutes from the East end. I'm at SAHM with an 18 month old son. We should get together once to you settle in.
