Waxing Philosophical with 3 Year Olds

So, I just had two two-day-long drives alone with my kids. 5, 3 and 2. Needless to say, the conversation topics were boundless. We brought CDs (our car is old school radio and CDs only) Aside from the radio, we must have listened to the Carpenter's "Sing, Sing a Song" about 45 times when I would no longer repeat Boys Dont' Cry by the Cure or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart. My 2 year old sings her Boooooys Doooon't Cwyyyyy requst. Anyway, we were discussing the concepts of heaven and hell on the way to visit very religious relatives. My 3 yo son understands the belief that if people do "wrong" things, they go to a terrible place called hell. So. We passed a Fed Ex semi truck off the road, and he asked me in a very worried voice, "Mom, that man pulled his truck off the road. That's wrong. Will he go to hell?"
Then, at the Hampton Inn, I was struggling to keep all the "personal pillows and stuffed animals" from falling off the luggage cart thingie with my badly packed little totes rolling around, when I heard a man say, "Don't feel bad" and turned to see a dad standing there at the check-in desk with a gigantic stuffed dolphin.

What are some deep conversations you've had with kids driving? And what songs do your kids like in the car? Do your kids bring their bed time "friends" to motels?

What can I do next?

I giggled a lot thinking about your drive, A.. My mom tells me that I asked her around this age if the Devil had blue eyes. I wonder why on earth I asked that!

My own boys said a prayer everytime we heard a siren while riding in the car. I had to try to reduce that when they did it over and over in heavy traffic when people were blowing their horns...

We were big on Wee Sing and Raffi. And there was no going ANYWHERE without bedtime lovies if we were going somewhere overnight!

We listen to a lot of Ladytron in the car. I need to get them listening to the Cure!

My 3 year old (will be 4 in march) has been obsessed with the concept of "everything" as of late. I am finding this very interesting.

My kids try to bring their friends everywhere! Of course they'd get to come into the motel. This summer, my daughter had a backpack filled with stuffed friends we dragged to New Jersey from Chicago. The one night we slept in a hotel, she dumped all her friends out and then jumped on the bed with excitement, saying "can we come here again!"

My son, Sam, has a blanket named "Buddy". Buddy comes with us when there could ever be the possibility for sleep. Buddy is a hand-crocheted pink and blue blanket made by my friend. Buddy used to be soft and fluffy. Now he's got holes and he's pretty threadbare. Sam doesn't care. He balls Buddy up and hugs him to sleep every night. He doesn't really need Buddy anymore for his waking hours, but he's a must-have for any nap or sleep. So for road trips, that's a definite YES.
Sam is only 4, so deep conversations are pretty limited to subjects like teasing and sharing (and how some people don't know how to share) and sometimes we talk about how much he is loved and what love means.
His favorite song is "Three Little Birds".
It sounds like you had some pretty memorable talks this holiday. Kind of makes the long car ride worth it?

First, congrats on the long drives with your little ones!

We've had many deep discussions on most things. I just keep it age appropriate. The car seems to be the place it happens the most.

When my kids were younger I played kiddy music and they liked it but they went through phases of what they liked. At age 3 they like Pearl Jam. By age 4 they liked Cheap Trick. After that I played what I liked. But I did play slower music or softer music to calm them more. They wilder the music the wilder they got. Same with TV shows. Slow paced shows kept them not as wild.

2 of my triplets must have their bunnies from when they were infants. They're 7 now and they cannot sleep until they have "bunny" with them. And we take them on trips and I have to make those top priorities of things not to lose or they will cry and be very upset. These are things that soothed them as babies when mom couldn't spread herself out enough with 3 babies at once. So these are important for the two. and they are the two more independent and self assured of the three.

So far no motel stays yet but yes, "Sheep" a sateen queen sized sheet that has been my son's only lovie goes with us on trips or overnighters. My son loves "Here I Go Again On My Own," "I Wanna Rock," and "Life Is a Highway" Rascall Flatts version. We are musical people and we love us some rock.
