Congrats on your almost-newborn! :)
First, you could have a high leak--any leak can 'heal itself' and reseal. And like a previous poster, your amniotic fluid replenishes itself so don't worry about your levels being low. As for infection--the easiest place to get infection is in the hospital. Stay home as long as possible (24hr rule doesn't apply as long as you are at home--I've known of women who have gone a week after their water has broken...again, it replenishes...just rest and drink lots of water)...and ONLY go in to the Hospital once a good contrax pattern has been established.
My friend was gushing fluid (high leak), but water hadn't REALLY broken...no contrax in a pattern...went in to the hosp. anyways...after hours of no contrax, they had to start PIT, epi, etc...eventually a vaccuum extraction...big tear, 45 min to stitch, didn't get to hold baby or nurse, baby had low blood sugar, fed a formula bottle, got nursing all screwed up, etc...ALL BECAUSE she didn't wait until contrax really got started.
ALL WOMEN deserve a wonderful birth. I believe it is our birthrite. Follow your instincts, listen to your body and your baby, and stay away from the cascade of intervention. I wish you an empowering and wonderful birth!
