Hi Ladies:
Its me again. :0)

My 15 month old grandson started walking at around 13 months. He crawled for about 1 month then started walking. He seems to carry himself okay most of the time, its just that he seems to lose his balance a lot and he falls. Seems clumsy. He never looks down to see where he is going which I guess is pretty normal, so when he trips over his toys I understand why, but when there is nothing in his way, he seems to just walk a little to fast or turns and he falls. I'm concerned that there may be something wrong with his balance. My daughter, his mother started walking at 8 months and I dont remember her being as clumsy. Now my grandson needs glasses, but he doesnt wear them. We try and put them on him but he takes them off. He has a scar on his left retina. He was a borderline preemie and we were told by his optomologist that its not correctable. He will have the scar on his retna forever. Plus we were told he has astigmatism. So I am wondering if all this clumsiness has to do with his slight impaired vision although its wierd because he looks right at you or at what he wants to get or go too. He has fallen a few times and hit his head. We have hardwood floors but we have always been told he is fine, no concussions. Anyway, I'm just wondering if any of you other mothers (i'm grandma) have experienced this with your children when they started walking. How long before the clumsiness went away? Or if all the falling or the vision issue is now an issue? He has his next wellness appt at 18 months, but I am wondering if we should make his appt sooner about this or am I overreacting as most grandmothers do. My daughter says he just needs time to adjust his walking, but I'm no so sure. Thanks ladies

What can I do next?

No I never experienced that with my kids. But, when they are just starting to walk.. well, they are not "expert" at it yet. So yes, they often times fall on their tush, or what not, which is normal.

BUT, I would for sure, talk to his eye Doctor and I would have him/her explain his vision problems IN FULL DETAIL to you/his Mom. I'm surprised they didn't tell you about what the ramifications are, of his eye problems. USUALLY this is standard procedure... explaining to the patient what and how their eye problems will affect them etc. AND IF THEY DO NOT WEAR THEIR GLASSES, I imagine this then makes their vision un-corrected.

ALL of this, is probably most certainly because of his eye problems. BUT simply ask the eye Doctor. That is the only way to get answers to this.

Also, is he wearing kid glasses... the kind with the strap on the back...? I know Sear's has MANY different kinds of kids glasses... even for swimming. And I'm sure many other opticians would have kids glasses too, with a strap on the back. That may help him to keep it on...?

In the meantime, he is 15 months old now, and has his next check-up at 18 months... but this does not mean you cannot take him in for an appointment before then. A child/baby can be taken to the Doctor anytime, as necessary.

By the way, it's a good Grandma you are, that you are "observant"... but without being petty about it. :)

All the best,
Susan

The vision could be a factor but kids in general just need time to grow into their feet.
Both of my kids had troubles at first and my son more so than my daughter. It was good six months before they were perfect at it. I work at a preschool and the little ones fall down often.
Check his shoes. A lot of shoes are too big, bulky and heavy for their little feet. There are shoes (I don't know what they are called) that are thin soled, kind of like moccosins. These are great for learning to walk. Barefeet and socks is good too.

Just to be on the safe side, I would ask your daughter to refer her son to the local Regional Center for an evaluation to have his accessed for possible gross motor delays, visual disturbances, sensory processing disorder or developmental delays. You can get the telephone number from your pediatrician's office or maybe by googling the county that you are in plus "regional center".

If there's something that is causing your grandson to fall a lot, not see or process everything that is going on near him or in his immediate vicinity, then they will provide your grandson with whatever in-home therapy he needs at no costs to your daughter or her family. It may be that your grandson is just fine, but it's better to be safe than sorry, and most delays or conditions can be greatly improved by providing the right kind of therapy as soon as possible in a child's life.

Wishing you and your family all the best.

I've not had experience with this with my son...but, I as a kid was diagnosed with a stigmatism and if I didn't wear my glasses when I was playing, it would affect my peripheral vision and thus, my balance.

I was of course about 7 years old when I got my first pair, and was able to pick my own out.

What I would do, as Susan mentioned, have your daughter call the eye doctor and ask the same questions you just asked us...it makes sense that they would/should have given that information up front with the diagnosis.

If there is a concern about his walking, if he is falling down and running into things and it's not 'normal' learning to balance type falling then I'd consult the Pediatrician.

In any case, while he's with you keep a journal of his walking and how it appears to you. How long he walks before falling. Is is on his bum or just falling? This will be super helpful for the doctors visit. And, I agree with Susan...a doctor's visit can be made at any time it is deemed necessary.

My son was 8 weeks preemie, and ended up in PT/OT due to joint tightness that made it uncomfortable for him to walk...but, it's apparently very common in preemies.

Good Luck!

Hi V.,
My son started walking at 9 1/2 months and fell a ton at first. Now he's a year old and is falling less and less. I did notice however that his shoes had a lot to so with how steady he was. I highly recommend pedi-peds and as he starts getting comfortable in those, see kai run shoes are the next
step. I initally bought him stride rights and he seemed to fall more with those. Good luck.
