my 32mo has battled a cold/allergies since sept and we have seen the doc serveral times. the latest has been for a day o vomiting at that time the doc said that he would not treat him with anitbotics again because he has already had two with in the past two months and that he would treat his cough either so we have been following orders and giving children claritan and triaminic thin strips for his cough. it is pretty controlled with out treating it during the day however i give both meds at bedtime which is around 8pm and by midnight he is usually up coughing and refuses the medicine he eventually goes back to sleep. i was just wondering what any of you think i am starting to think that maybe he is becoming routined to waking especially since we are potty training and he also goes potty then too however i was curious if you moms have any ideas on how to get him to sleep through the night again. I do folllow his normal bedtime routine we ever he wakes, or should i ignore this behavior and let him go back to sleep on his own. thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

My daughter had similar symptoms and we found that she had sinus issues - her sinus cavity was not draining properly. She has since had her adenoids out. I suggest visiting an ENT.
Also - I put vicks on the bottom of her feet with socks over them. This works WONDERFULLY! And a little goes a long way....and I loved being able to stop some of the OTC meds.

I agree for the most part with the other posts. If he's coughing, then that's what's waking him up. Hopefully he'll go back to normal after he's feeling better. BUT, my kids tend to get into new night time routines easily and we often have to "re-sleep train" after they're sick. When he's feeling better and still waking up, that's when I would ignore his behavior and let him go back to sleep on his own.

Also, have you tried giving him honey? If it's a dry itchy cough, that usually helps my kids at night. My pediatrician recommended that for my 3yo last winter when she was having major colds and coughs and antibiotics weren't appropriate. It's our go-to remedy now, just a spoonful helps a lot, and it tastes great :)

My first go to is always a cool mist humidifier in their bedroom and vick's vapor rub. For severe congestion, apply when he goes to bed and then reapply when you go to bed. The first adult to get up in the morning could reapply again ( my husband will get up at 4 or 5 am for work). Both of these things can be done in addition to the medicines you are giving now. You can also use the vick's during the day. I rarely give my kids any kind of cough medicine. Their pediatrician who is a great diagnostician said that they had Reactive Airway Disorder. This means that giving cough syrup or anything designed to slow their respirations actually makes them worse. I will give them liquid benadryll because it reduces inflammation and it helps them. I don't understand why your doctors aren't ruling out asthma or R.A.D. ? It's a fairly classic symptom, I'm told, in early asthma to have bad congestion and coughing at night. After learning from experience that the over the counter cold medicines simply don't work, I just stopped using them altogether. Best of luck to you and your baby. Vick's also makes a baby vick's version that isn't quite as strong. We prefer to use the cream version rather than the original petroleum jelly one.

Wow, poor thing! Sounds awful. Your doctor won't do anything else for him and it sounds like something is sticking around. Maybe the antibiotics are resistant to whatever he has. Would you consider getting a second opinion for him?
It just sounds like he's waking up from the coughing. My son will occasionally wake for a few nights because of teething or a cold but after a few nights he gets back to his routine. I'm guessing once your son feels better he'll go back to sleeping through the night. Take care :)

if he is wheezing with his cough you should have the doctor check for different types of bronculitus. its an infection in his bronculi airways. my son had it and his doctor kept telling us it was just a cold and give him cough medicine. after the 3rd week of it we had enough and went to a different doctor. they did a bunch of different tests and he has a respitory airway disease. it has the same symptoms of asthema without the airways closing down completely. he wheezes and coughs when he gets really excited and runs around too much. or even when it starts getting cold out. we have him on a nebulizor for the bad ones we didnt catch like the nighttime ones that wake him up. and an inhalor for the not so bad ones during the day. but luckly he seems to not need it as much the older he gets (it started around 24 months and he is now 4) talk about scary stuff. but its something to talk to your doctor about. have him/her check his airways for inflamation.

If he's up coughing, he's up because he's sick. Don't ignore him. When he's better, he'll sleep again.

Sorry, that's as good as it gets right now.

Hello, I think you need to change the meds you are giving him. Sometimes children will get used to them and they won't help anymore! They make a child dose of Musnus (sp)! I know the adult dose works wonders, and my children take the child doses and they help! But I don't know how young you can give it so you would have to look on the box and see if your son can have it! But it works wonders with bringing up all that mucus! And do the Vaseline on the bottom of the feet as well.....Good Luck and H. your little one gets better soon! Oh BTW if the box say 3yrs and up your son is close enough to 3 !

I think it sounds like your child has some pretty severe allergies that the over the counter meds are not helping. If I were you I'd make an appointment with an allergist to rule this out. If it isn't allergies I'd go see another doctor for a second opinion.
