You don't get diarrhea from overeating.
She threw up, she stays home. Period. Just because she only did it once last night, doesn't mean more couldn't be coming today. Do you really want to risk setting her up for puking at school?
Last night my daughter woke up in the middle of the night and had vomiting and diarrhea. She threw up most of the dinner she had that night. She did eat a decent amount. So far she only vomitted once and slept threw the rest of the night. Should I be concerned that this is a stomach virus? Normally with stomach viruses, though, the vomitting is constant, not just a one time thing. Or could this just have been from eating too much? Do I keep her home from school? She had no fever and of course I will see how she feels when she wakes up. I don't want to keep her home from school if it was just an upset stomach from overeating. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You need to keep her home. I hate it when parents downplay their kids sicknesses for their convenience. One year a friend didn't want to miss church so she brought her child who had thrown up a few hours before, saying that breakfast "didn't agree with him". Well, he passed on a stomach virus that put my daughter in the hospital for 5 days.
Be considerate of your daughter and of other kids and keep her home for the day.
Keep her home. Most schools policies will state that the child be kept home for 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea.
Keep her home. She hasn't vomited more because she hasn't eaten anymore to irritate her stomach. Keep her food very light oday and if she doesn't want to eat, fine. Keep her hydrated.
Another vote for keeping her home regardless of how she feels. Our school has a policy that the kids have to be vomit-free for 24 hours before returning.
Keep her home! Please spare other families and keep her home. Our school's rule is that a child must be free of ANY vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school. This rule, which is good for everyone, does not specify "but only if it's a virus, otherwise, send them." It does not matter that you "think" it is not a virus -- you don't know, and if she is sick at school, other kids will catch it. Please talk to your doctor about how stomach viruses can behave in kids.
"If she feels fine, send her" has nothing to do with anything. Kids can feel fine and be energetic and still have a virus.
You write that "Normally with stomach viruses the vomiting is constant." That's not accurate - you just haven't experienced yet the kind of virus that causes little vomiting. Some viruses in some people do not cause constant vomiting. If her stomach is really emptied out, she will not keep vomiting and vomiting, but she still would have a virus present in her system. It sounds as if you are hoping so much that this isn't one that you're going with the hopeful assumption she just overate.
My child has had viruses where she vomited once, then not again for 22 hours. The pediatrician told us this is very normal for some kids with some viruses.
Also, fever has nothing to do with stomach viruses. Sometimes a person might have a fever along with one but lack of a fever does not mean she is clear of a virus.
Vomiting can be caused by a virus, foodborne illnesses (some of which can be very serious in young children), food allergies, many things.
The fact that she apparently vomited hours after eating dinner would indicate the issue is probably not mere overeating. If she had gorged and then vomited shortly afterward, that might be one thing but unless she simply stuffed herself silly at dinner, truly, don't assume this is overeating. I think you really don't want to keep her out of school and are trying to convince yourself it's not a virus but you don't know. I was on the verge of taking my kid back to school the next day after staying home, when she had vomited once, and then after nearly a full 24 hours she vomited again and when I called the doctor, they confirmed, just keep her home until there is no vomit for a full 24.
Only if she was overeating salmonella.
the rule is 24 hours with no vomiting. so she needs to stay home..
food poisioning is possible.. (some nasty germs in her food)
vomiting is generally not caused by overeating.. but if the kid goes to a carnival and eats candy chips and junk all day.. that can cause vomiting..
Yes, they have to stay home from school for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting. Even if it was just once. Some stomach viruses manifest in just one big vomit. You can't be certain that it's not a bug, so she should be kept home. It's not fair to expose everyone else.
I've never heard of vomiting and diarrhea happening as a result of overeating. I think she has a virus. No, those viruses can be NASTY and last a long time, you often need something from the doctor to allow her stomach to settle. I wouldn't let her go to school. I'm sure she feels terrible.
Sometimes it's all cleared up by barfing up just once.
If she feels fine in the morning then send her to school.
If she get's sick there the nurse will send her home.
It sounds like she ate something that was perhaps a bit out of date or that just didn't agree with her stomach. Consider the ingredients to the foods she ate.
I ate Finnish bread one time and in the middle of the night threw up spice looking things that were in the bread. So I don't eat that spice because I didn't like throwing up that substance. I wasn't sick I simply ate something that didn't agree with my tummy and that often works through coming out the bottom too. There is always a bit that doesn't get out the top.
It sounds like she is okay.
Does she usually overeat?
Or not?
Did she eat something that was spoiled?
Is anyone else, in your family having diarrhea and/or vomiting from what you ate for dinner?
If not, then she is probably sick.
And it is not true, that with stomach viruses a person vomits constantly.
My kids have had stomach viruses, but they did not vomit, constantly.
But it could be food poisoning. But, the rest of you are not sick.
Did you all eat the same thing for dinner?
I doubt it is just from overeating.
It is either she is sick. Or it is food poisoning.
Yes, you keep her home if she is still feeling icky.
Regardless of if she actually vomits or has diarrhea.
And take her to the doctor.
You keep her HOME, from school.
The 24-hour rule, applies to vomiting/diarrhea.
I would not send her nor would I send my son. If she does have a virus the rest of the school does not need it also. The rule at our school is 24 hours also. If she has a history of stomach issues that is one thing but considering she has both vomiting and diarrhea it is probually a virus.
We recently had the stomach bug and my little guy vomited several times the first day, and once a day for a few days after that. I didn't call him "well" and let him play with the baby because he had just puked once. Keep her home.
