Habitat for Humanities is a big group is Portland I suggest you contact them. I have volunteered with them quite a bit building houses and such.
I am interested in donating time (hopefully my family also)- to build homes, help clean up trash, etc. locally - has anyone else had any experience with an organization already established here in Oregon. Any information would be great!
Thank you to all in advance :)

A great and reputable national organization is Habitat for Humanity, which builds and improves homes for those who can't afford houses of their own. I found two branches in the Portland metro area, and I am sure they can refer you to other offices of their agency. Here are the two:
East Metro office, ###-###-####, www.mthoodhabitat.org
West office, ###-###-####, www.wwhfh.org
Blessings on you for wanting to help in this way. Good luck.
How wonderful! There are lots of great agencies in this area, and great things you can do on your own. My family volunteers for life2orphans (www.life2orphans.org) It's a great, worldwide organization based right here in Portland.
My kids really like helping with L2O, as the charity benefits other kids.
You can also check out Sisters of the Road Cafe. They have some great family volunteer activities.
Hi J.,
What a great way to teach your child to help others. We volunteer in Vancouver at Share House with our almost 8 year old daughter serving meals and cleaning up. I found a link to Portland opportunities to volunteer: http://www.handsonportland.org/ and we know families that have served meals at Portland Rescue Mission. Good luck finding the right place for your family.

The few that come to mind are SOLV which does environmental clean-up, city and natural areas. Rose City Community Development which does a whole array of things. Habitat for Humanity which builds homes for low income home buyers. If you like to be in nature, Tryon Creek Regional Park has Ivy Pulls which helps restore the forest in the park, great exercise! SOLV has been around for years, hopefully you could find some contact info on-line. I forget what the letters stand for...
Habitat for Humanity is in Portland. Good for you!
Habitat for humanity builds houses with volunteers. there are chapters all over the city.
Also, in connection with Luis Palau's crusade in August, most churches are having service projects. East Hill church in Gresham is organizing a huge one, i forget the day, but you can check out www.easthill.org . Keyword is "service". you could call a church near you, & ask for "projects" .
And as a last resort, I'm remodeling, & haven't got my yard really done yet (lanscaping started 2-3 years ago) and could use some help if you are offering.....
My mother used to work for Habitat for Humanity. It is a great organization. They have local chapters in every state. My mom pasted away 2 yrs. ago so I don't have any current contacts for you but I'm sure you can go on line: http://www.habitatportlandmetro.org/volunteer/index.php or find them in the phone book.

That is so great of you. Maybe check for a the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity? Also St Vincents in NW is a great charity - and if you google search you'll find info re: low income families needing assistance etc. Good luck and kudos to you. M.
