Vitamins - McKinney, TX

I've noticed that all of the prenatal vitamins I take seem to be making me sick. It's not the taste of them, I'm pretty good at choking them down with lots of fluids but after I start to digest them I get so nauseous I can't hold anything down for hours. I've actually taken to snagging an adult dose of my kid's Gummi Bear vitamins. They don't make me sick at all but I'm sure they're lacking in something compared to prenatals.
Anyone have the same issues and which vitamins did you end up taking?

What can I do next?

I had the same problem with my first pregnancy then I learned that most over the counter adult and childrens vitamins have poor absorption rates. I now take Melaleuca's vitamins, they are one of the few with an over 85% documented solubility so you actually have energy and feel better. You can learn more at www.oligofructosecomplex.net and www.livetotalwellness.com/TEXAS.
Good luck to you,

Hi J.,
I remember I was the exact same way with my pre-natals. I actually just found out about a new product that would be perfect for you (I wish I had when I was pregnant):

http://www.marketamerica.com/C./product-10106/isotonix-pr...

I just ordered some to send my sister-in-law who is pregnant with twins and struggling with morning sickness. Read the testimonial section and users all rave about how it doesn't make them sick.

A lot of doctors are prescribing them because they are isotonic and are much easier for your body to absorb. Just watch the product video on the link above and it should explain it better than I can. :-)

Good luck to you and best wishes for your pregnancy.

Eat, and eat something substantial before you take your vitamins. A couple of crackers won't do. If you are taking more than one tablet, take them at different times/meals so that you aren't putting too much on your stomach at once. Drink water, but not too much all at once.
Best of Luck,

It could be the iron or another synthetic "nutrient" in the prenatal vitamin. I would suggest taking an organic, natural vitamin without Iron, and taking an Iron supplement later in the day. Iron should be a Iron + Vitamin C for better absorption. I know Shaklee vitamins exceed all vitamin requirements for pregant and nursing mothers.

Talk to your Ob Dr or nurse. As long as you eat a healthy diet then you could probably get away with just taking Iron, Vitamin D & Folate.

Another idea is to try taking your vitamins at a different time of the day. I usually take my vitamins first thing in the morning but when pregnant I would take my vitamins at night...otherwise I would probably toss them anyways.

If you are pregnant you can get your Dr to give you prescription for vitamins. They are basically the same but are coated better.

Also try taking them at night right before you go to bed. Hopefully you'll be asleep if your tummy gets quesy.

How far along are you? This happened to me in my first trimester, so my OB had me take Viactiv chews ( it was the iron in the prenatals that was making me so sick and the Viactiv do not have as much or any) and a Flintstones (for the extra Folic Acid). Basically what you are trying to get from the prenatal is the extra Folic Acid. Then after my first trimester she wanted me to be getting some iron so she prescribed me a prenatal that had iron but not as much as other over the counter ones. It might be the iron making you sick. Have you tried taking them at night before you go to bed?

I am 21 weeks with my first and prenatals made me SICK. I am currently taking Flinstones vitamins with a folic acid supplement (I bought mine at the dollar store). I just bought the gummy kind recently, but they seem to lack in total vitamins compared to the chewable. But I compared the chewable label to my prenatal, and it was almost identical (except for folic, hence the supplement). I do not know about its absorbtion. Also, be wary of the store brand "Flintstones" as they have Aspartame in them which is probably not good to have while pregnant.
I would say check with your doctor, but that has worked for me.

Hi J.! Oh I so remember that nasty taste that comes up hours later. I had to make sure I ate something with my vitamin but the one that I found was Expecta Lipil. It's in a yellow box. That was the one that I liked and agreed with my stomach. lol My good friend started those when she got pregnant and they work for her too. I did go thru several kinda though before I found one that worked. Good luck and congrats!

Hi J.,

Are you eating before taking the vitamin? I remember the only time a vitamin made me nauseous after taking it was when I had not eaten anything in a while. Make sure you have something in your tummy about 30 minutes before taking the vitamin. I would recommend staying away from the gummies. I've noticed that all the gummy vitamins I've seen definitely lack in other nutrients & vitamins you need and they don't have iron or folic acid which you especially need right now.
Talk to your OB about the vitamin making you sick and they should be able to give you lots of different samples you can try. I also thought the idea of taking the vitamin at night was a good idea. I have always had to take my BC pill at night before bed because it made me very tired if not. Take care and hope you find something that helps!! Good luck with the baby!
