Hi J. my daughter has been on Polyvitamin since the age of 6 months. She is now 17 months old and I still give it to her. I've seen two different doctors for her and both mandated it for her. She does brush her teeth and drinks only milk and water and the doctor still wants me to give it to her.

It's funny you ask this as I have just gone to the dentist and asked for any suggestions on how to brush the teeth of a 14 month-old. I had a small brush and the baby toothpaste (no flouride so they can swallow it) and he wouldn't stay still. He suggested getting one of the brushes you put on your finger. I'm definitely going to try it! But back to the flouride situation. The dentist also mentioned to make sure the toothpaste didn't have flouride because the baby may swallow it and too much flouride is no good for a child. I persisted since we've been giving him "baby water" which has flouride since he was practically born. He wouldn't go too much into why it was bad but mentioned too much flouride can be toxic and when a child gets his permanent teeth, they may have white stripes in them. You could probably do an internet search for flouride and babies and see what comes up. We are definitely cutting back on the additional flouride from the water. Good luck! Hope this was helpful!

Yes to much fluoride is not good for your child. It will perminately stain her adult teeth. How do I know this...I was given to much as a kid and my teeth have white spots. My doctor told me that my son really didnt' need fluoride until he was about 3. If you give her juice during the day cut it 50% with water, she shouldn't be getting whole juice anyway (way to much sugar). If you have city water it already has fluoride in it. If you have a well, call your local water department to see where you can have it tested for fluoride. The test usually only costs about $25. Honestly, I'd be more likely to get a new pharmacist then a new doctor. They aren't trained in medicine and I would take the doctor's advice.

I guess it depends on your circumstances. My daughters pediatrician prescribed her a vitamin for flouride because we have a well and we don't drink our water EVER. We won't even give it to our dog. I can't really imagine why your doc would say no way, especially is she isn't drinking water and you are having a problem brushing her teeth. Has she gone to a dentist yet? What does the dentist say? Cause I'm assuming it's the pediatrician saying no way right? A second opinion wouldn't hurt...

I'm actually wondering about this myself - they say that NJ doesn't have any flouride in the tap water.....not sure where u live.

I have a daughter the same age and it is a STRUGGLE to get those teeth brushed.....

To get her to drink more water u can mix like 1/4 juice with 3/4 water - they love that.....That's been my daughter's entry into the "juice" world - highly diluted juice w/ a LOT of water....

Hi J.,

If you do the research, like I did and so many of my friends have done, you will learn that Flouride was once a Rat poison and that it has no true value in protecting your childs teeth or anyone else's teeth. In fact, the substance was introduced into the system by the Chemical industry to Dentist years ago and due to the profit motive the Dentist went along with it. Such is the case with mercury fillings--which we should all know is also toxic. I use filtered water that filters out the Flouride and my childrens teeth are perfect. I hope this helps you decide what's better for your child.

Hi J.,

Last year we moved from Manhattan to Fair Lawn, NJ. Before we moved my pediatrician gave us a prescription for Vitamins with fluouride because she explained to us that the tap water in NJ does not have fluoride. When we saw our new pediatrician in Fair Lawn she also told us that our daughter needed to take the vitamins with flouride. So I guess you need to check whether your town water has flouride in it.

Did you tell your pedi your daughter doesnt drink water??
My kids take Enfamil PolyViSol vitamins. Not sure if they have fluoride or not. (And I am currently out of them, so I cant even check the bottle.) I dont worry about fluoride because my kids both drink tap water with their juice.
You can buy Nursery water by the gallon, and that has fluoride in it, and I'm pretty sure Poland Springs sells fluoride enhanced water. You can use it to dilute juice. Just so she has some in her diet.

Our pediatrician consults a list. If you town has flourinated water it is not necessary to have vitamins with flouride in them. Check with your water supplier. Check with your pediatrician why they are not prescribing these vitamins there must be a viable reason.

If you have city water (vs. well water) you probably have fluoride in your water. If she drinks juice mixed with water or eats food made with your own water (jello, pasta, etc) she is probably getting enough. Your pediatrician would know better than the pharmacy.

Also, my father-in-law is a dentist and we asked him about fluoride for our son. He said if your water has fluoride it is sufficient (obviously, they need to consume water in one way or another to get the fluoride).

By the way, Tri-Vi-Sol does not contain fluoride. It has vitamins A, D & C.

In my experience you put 5 doctors in the same room with the same information and you will get 5 different opinions. I will give you my opinion. And this comes from lots a research and advice from my stepfather who was(now retired) a very well respected dentist. Flouride is needed. My step brother's mother refused to use the vitamins with flouride(even though her husband was a dentist and strongly suggested it) and by age 2 he had 13 cavities, and yes he did brush. My brother, my sister, and myself were all on the vitamins with flouride and we had great teeth. I hope this helps. Good luck.

P.S. My daughter just turned 1 and her doc automatically prescribed the flouride vitamins.

Yup, her doctor prescibed it right away ...we moved out of NYC and NY has Flouride in the water - that is why it is not a big issue out there...but when we moved to PA her new doctor (in Hackettstown)

I did see a new article once on how more people are going to the dentist with problems since they are drinking more bottled water and it doesnt contain flouride.... so I give it to her. she has been on it since she was 2....

if you need a new doctor I have a great one in Hackettstown...
Plaza Family Care -they are in the West Wing of Hackettstown Hospital...###-###-#### ...Dr. Ann Falbo is her doctor but there are other doctors there too.

Hi J.,
I believe you have to find out if the water in your town is fluoridated. If not then you need the vitamins with fluoride. If your tap water is fluoridated then your daughter is getting the fluoride she needs without the supplement. Too much fluoride is absolutely no good for kids! If you look at the baby and toddler toothpaste you will see that none of it contains fluoride. My daughter takes vitamins with it because we live in Point Pleasant and we don't have it in our city water. Our pediatrician already had this information but maybe the pharmacist in your town knows better? Good luck to you. I hope you don't end up changing doctors if you are comfortable with the ones you have. Hope this was helpful.

J.,

I had the same battle with my sons doctor (one of the reasons im switching). He had told me that since there was flouride in the tap water that my son didnt need flouride in his vitamin and refused to give me a prescription for one. I also explained to him that my son did not drink tap water...he still refused and told me to give him tap water(again after I told him he DIDN'T DRINK TAP WATER). I am switching docs and i recommend the same to you. My niece and nephew were both givin flouride in their multi vitamin since the age of 1.

Good luck,
C.
