Vitamin Changes.

Ever since my husband and I started trying to conceive, I've been taking some low dose, over the counter prenatal vitamins. I've never had a problem with them before, I stomached them just fine.

In the last week, it's gone from all hunky dory, to crippling nausea a few moments after i've swallowed them.

This is my first time, and I'm a little worried about this drastic change in my tolerance. We are pretty sure I'm pregnant, as all the usual signs have started cropping up, and we're going to get a blood test this Thursday. So far I haven't thrown up from morning sickness, it's just been difficult to eat and smell most things.

I know it's normal for the prenatals to be tough to swallow, but is it normal for them to be difficult after having taken them for a while?

What can I do next?

Sounds to me like you are pregnant. Many women can not tolerate a prenatal vitmain during pregnancy. My doctor offers an Isotonic drinkable prenatal that tastes great and works for many women with tummy troubles. You may be able to get them at your doctors office but if not you can get them here: http://www.visionary-wellness.com. Good luck, hope this helps.

Because the FDA doesn't approve OTC prenatal vitamins, there's no regulation over the quality/grade of ingredients.

Many pharmacy chains are striking deals with prenatal vitamin manufacturers to provide Rx vitamins free. They are FDA approved and have standards they're required to meet with the FDA for the manufacturing process as well as safety mechanisms in place while they're on the market.

I'd recommend asking your OB/GYN's office if there are any stores in your local area that offer Rx prenatal vitamins. Since you're trying to conceive, you're likely working with your OB's office anyhow, and they are the best place to ask for advice.

Good luck - each person experiences each pregnancy differently, so we can only comment from our own experiences. I never had issues with nausea, swallowing or certain foods during either of my pregnancies.

If you take them before eating, the iron and calcium in them can cause nausea and even vomiting. If you're pregnant, your stomach will be more sensitive. Try taking them after having eaten. I learned this the hard way. In my youth I took my vit/min pill just before I headed out the door for work. I skipped breakfast back then. I started vomiting into the kitchen sink shortly after finishing the glass of water. I felt foolish when the doctor said it's my vit/min pills. I thought I had a more serious problem. lol

Take your vitamins with food and try a different brand. You Dr. should be able to help with that.

Perhaps you should see a doctor...or take a pregnancy test.

Take them after a meal. A doctor once told me not to take with OJ and once I stopped I felt fine.

I could never take my prenatal vitamins during the day during my first trimesters without feeling terribly nauseous, so I've always taken then at night before bed during those first few months. With my first pregnancy, I was so sensitive to the vitamins that I would even wake up to throw up. (Such a wonderful time...or not!) I would try to eat a cracker and drink a little juice with it just before going to bed to try to keep it down. Though it feels unbearable when you're going through the nausea of the first trimester, try to remember that it's a good sign that things are progressing well. Congratulations!
