Vicks VapoRub on Bottom of Feet at Bedtime?

Hello fellow Mamas

I thought I had read some former posts about applying Vicks to the bottom of kids' feet at bedtime. Some people swore by it. What exactly was this for? Congestion? I am already aware of podiatrist recommendations to apply to toe nail bed affected by fungal infections. It wasn't that.

Please fill me in on this little helpful hint. Thanks!

It helps if their congested and coughing where they can't sleep. It provides almost immediate relief and allows them to sleep peacfully. I only wish I knew this for my DD but I didn't learn this little gem until I had the twins.

we use vicks alot! however, i have never put it on their feet. always on their chest and back. we also use it for their aching muscles after workouts etc. I often get sinus headaches and rub it on my forehead and back of my neck. walmart has a generic vicks that is only around 2 bucks.

I have used it in the past for all 4 of my kids. Whey they have a bad cough or running nose, I actually rub it over their chest, back, behind the ears and forhead, and under feet. Make sure you put socks on after applying it. I've noticed a differece in 2-3 days after. It's a remedy I use often. With 4 kids you know at least two is bound to catch what the other has eventually. PS- try not to have them wear heavy clothing at night, they tend to sweat out the cold and sometimes in the middle of the night they wake up with a wet PJ top. (probably from Fever or too much covers. Good Luck

I was told by my ped's to do this. My little 14 month old was a premie and she always gets sick. Recently she was coughing her brains out all night. I put the vicks on her feet and she only got up once to cough. So it seems to work. Be careful putting it on their chest. Mine must of got her hand on it before I zipped her up. She was crying and wiping her eyes a few hours later. She had wiping her eyes in it. ouch..

I use the Vicks on the bottom of both of my kids feet (ages 4 1/2 and (almost)2. It helps with congestion or stuffy nose. It works pretty well. It takes a couple of nights but it does seem to help. With all of the medicine scares out there it's nice to have something that's not oral. Make sure you put socks on after so it doesn't rub off. The previous response is right though, do not put it on their face or chest especially for babies. ( They could rub it off with hands and get it in eyes too).
Another more natural remedy I use is to give your child (obviously over age 1) a Teaspoon or so of BUCKWHEAT honey before bed to ease coughing. It has to be buckwheat honey, not just plain honey. It works better than any cough medicine.
Good luck with the cold season!

Yes, it's supposed to be for congestion. I'm not sure if it works or not but I gave it a shot when my son had his last two colds. I didn't notice a difference but it didn't hurt to try! Sidenote: I know you didn't ask about this, (and probably already know) but don't put the Vicks anywhere on your child's face. I've known adults to do this but it's not safe for kids.

My friend told me to try it but I never have. My son can't keep socks on unless he has on shoes or footie pjs. So i figured it would be pointless. Just rub some on the kids chest and back and put a shirt on them so they can't get any on their hands. It works wonders. Also get a vaporizer. Just don't leave the door closed to their room all night (we close it when he goes to bed because his room is right off the frontroom) cause everything will get damp. You might cause a mold problem. If you have to close it like we do just crack it open before you go to bed so the moisture has somewhere to go.
