Vaginal Bleeding During and After Intercourse

Hi. I was wondering how serious this sounds and yes I do plan to call the dr but want some opinions.

My hubby and I usually have sex only over the weekends (we can't b/c he works 3rd shift during the week). We tend to have sex Friday & Saturday nights when the kiddos are in bed. My youngest is 1 and so far my periods have been pretty normal. Ranging frm 4-5 weeks with usually 6-8 days of that on my menstrual cycle. After having our last child, I have been known to kind of bleed every now and then after sex or actually during, but we attributed that to vaginal dryness. I know when we have used lurication I never bled, but we stopped using it cause we didn't seem to need it. My bleeding has never been that bad though.

This weekend, we had sex Frday and no bleeding. Then Saturday, we went on a small trip and came back home and we were exhausted but did it anyways. Only this time it was horrible. I was a little dryer than normal but nothing I haven't been before. I just had a pap smear done a few months ago and it came back fine. Anyways, after we had sex, there was blood every where and it was a bright red. Normally if I have bled it is always light and gone by the next day. I am not to have my period for at least 3 weeks so it can't be that. I went in the bathroom and wiped off each other. I wasn't dripping in blood but it was gross. So I wore a pad that night to be safe and when I woke up I was still bleeding, not bright red but like a pink/brown color. So I let it go yesterday and again today I am, but it is so faint it isn't really noticeable. I think it is pretty much gone now. Does this sound serious? Or maybe we just need to learn to use lubrication? I have thought about taking those one pills that help you get excited, but I don't like to take anything unless necessary.

Any thoughts? This is so embarrassing but I know maybe one of you ladies could help. Thanks and sorry for the graphics!

So What Happened?

Ok so good news. I seen my obstetrician and she said I have a dry patch inside my uterus. This is why I was bleeding. They checked for an infection and it came back negative. Thanks ladies. It put my mind at ease.

I would say see your doctor, since bleeding after sex is not a normal occurrence. Streaks of blood maybe rarely, but needing a pad is different. That's unusual. You would have to be dry as sand to cause enough friction to cause bleeding, plus the discomfort would be grueling. I would see my doctor.

I would almost lay money that you are having small tears in the vaginal wall from dryness. I've seen stuff on TV about this and found it very interesting. You just don't realize how much friction there is during sex and if you aren't well lubricated it can cause a lot of tears resulting in bleeding. Bright red is usually what you will see with this, dark blood is more of what would come from something going on in your uterus.

I am 41 and there are certain times of the month that no matter what we do I HAVE to use lube. I have found that a silicone based on is the best, not water based like the ones you find at stores. I go to "smut" stores (as we call it) and buy the "good" lube and love it. Water based ones will soak in very quickly, still resulting in tears if you don't keep reapplying it. Silicone ones don't do that.

I have the same issues, we haven't done anything about it for me it has been worse since having my 2nd baby, he is 3 and a half now. Dr. did pap since then and no issues, he said it is common and not ot worry. It is very irritating though and is a deterrent to us having sex, becasue I can bleed for 1-2 days after each time, and I don't really want to deal with that every time!

You need to get some good lube girl! Go to a store together and pick some stuff out----silicone based works really well and you don't have to use alot. I would talk to your doctor if that doesn't help. Good luck!

I think you need to see a dr. and have another pap smear, just to be sure. Paps can sometimes miss things. Years ago I had a pap that was "normal" but missed pre-cervical cancer, which I had to have removed.

I wouldn't mess around with unusual vaginal bleeding, but insist that the doctors give me a good answer for why it is happening.

Vaginal dryness may be affecting you, and obviously you can feel if you have dryness, so like others recommended, using some good lubricant can be helpful.

However, I have had thinning of the vaginal tissue. It can come with age or changes in hormones or both. Thankfully it is an easy fix. My doctor gave me some vaginal estrogen cream. At first I used it daily for two weeks and now only ever 4 days or so. It helps rebuild the tissue so that it becomes thicker, more like how it was when I was younger and before children. Now I do not experience any irritation or bleeding. I still have some dryness, and sometimes we use lube and that helps.
