My 15 month old received his MMR and prevnar vaccine last Wednesday, the pediatrician said that he might develop a temperature up to 3 weeks later. It's now been a week and he just started running a low grade temp. (99.7 - 102). This is my first child and I have done some online research, but I would love to hear what kinds of experiences other moms had when their kids received this Vaccine. He has never had as much as the sniffles with any of the other vaccines that he received so this one kinda caught me of guard. Thank you all.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for all your help. I did call the doctor today, (cause he had said that he would like to know if he did develop a temp.) and they said that it's all good. He will probably break out in a rash today or tomorrow. He wasn't running any kind of a temperature this morning, so I hope the worst is behind us. Again thanks for all the advice.

In my opinion I would wait to give vaccines after 2 years of age and then give them in separate doses far apart from each other even the ones that come in threes, I would ask to have them separated.

I watch my nephews 30 hours a week, and the younger one just got this a few months ago. He also developed a low grade fever about a week afterwards. His mother called the doc and they told her to pay more attention to his actions than the thermometer. If he was still active, eating, playing, drinking, then he was ok. She also gave him alternate doses of children's Advil/Tylenol to combat the fever, as recommended by the doc (not sure about timing or how much though). It took a few days, but he was fine.

Good Luck!

personally not a big fan of vaccines...but if i had to give them again...i would choose to have each one given separately.
by the way, a fever is a reaction...don't let the drs. tell you differently.
you can have childs titers checked beforehand to see if they really need the shots or not.
what is prevnar , and is it a required shot?>
if there is something that is not required...why do it?
drs' aren't always right...

Every time my daughter got a vaccination, she developed a fever. With the MMR, she got a pretty high fever. My son on the other hand never has any reactons to his shots.

M., I would let your doctor know that your soon is running a fever. 102 degrees is not a low grade temp. Anything above 100.4 is not a low grade temp, it's a full fledged fever. It could be that he is sick, and even if it's not, your baby's doctor should be aware of any vaccine reactions.
I can't give you any feedback on Prevnar, it was new when my youngest was a toddler and I declined it. I also delayed his MMR vaccines, so I can't give you feedback on the one year old dose, he was 2 and 5 when he had his. Good luck!

If it is related to the vax just give him some tylenol to ease his discomfort or better yet some ice cream! It won't last long. He'll be just fine. It happened with my kids too.

My daughter never had a reaction to any vaccine except the MMR; it's a weird vaccine and I think it's a bit too strong to be administered in one dose. In any case, my daughter didn't run a fever, but the day she got it she was cranky and miserable all day. She was fine the next day, and that was that. Give your son some Tylenol for the fever and lots of love and snuggles. He'll be back to his normal self before you know it.

My daughter got a fever about 2 weeks or so after her MMR, so it is completely normal. My Dr. said that about 15% of kids get a fever 2-3 weeks after the MMR so I wouldn't worry at all!!!! She is totally fine and new studies have recently come out proving that the MMR has no link to autism. Good luck!!

I'd let your doctor know if its going to 102.00 You can give tylenol/motrin. Just treat the fever as you would any other fever. My son seemed to have some reactions about a week after. Just let him rest and fight it all!

I agree with what another mom said about every child reacting differently to each of the vaccines. My daughter got a fever 7 days after her MMR that lasted nearly a week. She hardly had any fever with most of her vaccines, but also had one after her fourth DPPT as well as a quite intense fever that lasted a whole week after her chicken pox vaccine. It was scary for me (my daughter also had not had illnesses that resulted in fevers) so I know what you are feeling. She has been absolutely fine but I am still nervous about her 2nd MMR shot that she gets next month. I will try to have faith that, despite the fever that she likely will get, she will continue to be perfectly wonderfull... I hope that you can do the same. A.
