My one year old, bless her heart, had her mmrv shots last Tuesday , it has been now a week later and she is starting to get a fever, she is sweating in her sleep, and she has these red bumps pop up but then fade within 24 hours. I know babies have these problems days after the shot,.....but a whole week afterward. Should I start thinking it's something else?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Def. need a new ped. The doctor never called and a on staff nurse ( not my daughters nurse) said it was normal, not a high fever and besides being a little grumpy, she seems to be herself. I'm going to get a second opinion, just because u can never be too careful, thank u so much beautiful mothers. Thank u so much.

Here is some info on the vaccine and side effects:
http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/vis-statements/mmrv.html

It says you can have side effects within 12 days of the vaccine, so it looks like this is a normal side effect.

My daughter had the shots separately - MMR and Varicella, and had no reaction. It does look like there are more side effects when the shots are combined.

What did the doctor's office say when you called to report the symptoms?

Both my kids had a brief (24-48 hr) fever exactly 1 week after their MMR. No other symptoms, and the fever was never high.

By all means, call your ped's office, especially if she has other worrisome symptoms, but I think that this is not unusual.

I would consult my doctor first and foremost, and ask as many questions as I need to to understand what is going on with my child. I would not allow my physician to brush me off or minimize my concerns. I would particularly want to know if it's possible that my child has vaccine induced measles or a rash/illness that's like measles (milder form?). I might even get a 2nd opinion.

Here is a PDF from the CDC - see the bottom of page 12 "Adverse Reactions Following Vaccination."

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/downloads/meas.pdf

Good luck and I hope she feels better soon. I am not a healthcare provider of any type and this is just my "mom" opinion.

It's not going to hurt to call. It could be a side effect. It could be a bug she picked up. Either way, it's not going to hurt to call the ped's office and talk to a nurse. That's what I would do.

It's quite possible there is no cause / effect relationship between these two events.

Call your doctor's office and discuss the symptoms.

That's the time she would get a fever etc. so it is perfectly normal.

I know you are worried (your first child?), but please take into consideration that #1, this may have nothing to do with the vaccine. You should have taken her in to see the doctor. He can't diagnose her over the phone. If you called the nurse and told her that your daughter had gotten the shot a week before and is this normal... then you have put two and two together for the nurse. I'm not saying that she made the right call about telling you that your DAUGHTER'S case is normal (she might be right about this being a side effect in some kids after the MMR - not my kids, btw). What she should have told you is to come in and check to make sure that there wasn't something else going on.

Number 2, please remember that a fever for a short period of time is NOTHING compared to getting mumps (which hurt OH so much!), measles or rubella. These diseases cause so much havoc in society. A pregnant woman exposed to an infected child can lose her pregnancy or the baby can be severely deformed. Children die from measles. It's scary stuff.

When you are focusing on the here and now, don't forget to focus on the future and what the ultimate goal is - your child never catching these diseases.
