I have a quick question, I have my tubes tied but I don't want to have my period when I am on vacation that is coming up next month.. Is it safe to get the depo shot just to stop the periods so I don't have one during the vacation. Would it hurt anything. I just want some advice before I done it. Thanks By the way, I have been on the depo shot before and it stopped my periods. Didn't have break through bleeding. Just completely stopped it.

What can I do next?

I had the Depo shot and it was wonderful, I had no side effects and no period at all. But it affects women differently and you can't guarantee it will do for you what it did for me. I would definately call my doctor, they would be the best to give you advice about this. Good luck!

Bobbie,
I really wouldn't do the depo just for this reason. There are way to many side effects to it. I would recommend the nuvaring. I use it all the time. With it you leave it in for 3 weeks and take it out for 1. If you just leave it in for 4 weeks and then replace it you are good to go and have no cycles. I did this recently when I was getting married. It works like a charm. Good luck!!

Bobbie, due to my personal experience with the depo shot I would definately say don't do it. I took the shot one time and experienced problems for approximately a year and a half from one shot. I started my period approx. 2 weeks and had that period for about 9 weeks before it was stopped by taking progestin. I had to have a biopsy to determine if it was anything else causing the bleeding and was told it was normal and all this was caused by the shot. I continued to have long, painful periods for the next year or so until I got pregnant with my last child who is now 5 months old and so far so good. This is just my personal experience but I have worked as nurse most of my life and have heard numerous horror stories. However, some people do okay, to me it wasn't worth it.

Honestly, the best person to ask is your Dr. Also, the shot might do the complete opposite and make you have your period even longer etc! That's what it did to me the first month I got the shot, it made it longer then normal and way worse... Just ask your Dr what he/she reccomends... Good Luck!

I wouldn't recommend the depo shot. The first few months you can have break through bleeding. Also I know several other women including myself that got very emotional/moody while on depo.

I would suggest a low-hormone pill.

Best of Luck!

Hi Bobbie,
First I would talk to your Dr. but also I am on the birth control called Yaz it I only have a period for 4 days and you can also just start a new pack and then have one when you get back or have one the week before. I have also been on nuvaring and also like it. When you are on this it only effects that are and the hormones doesn't go threw your blood stream, here again you are able to just put a new one in and not have a period for up to 3 months. Goodluck, W. P.S. it would be nice that when we are done having babies we could be done having periods also and not wait 20 more years, lol

The depo is different for everyone. It stopped my friend's period but I still had one every month. I am not sure if it would hurt anything or not. The whole point of the depo is so that you do not get pregnant but since your tubes are already tied I am not really sure. Maybe you should talk to you doctor about it since you are going to need a prescription for the depo anyhow.

Hi Bobbie,

Not sure about the depo shot but I would think that it would be safe to take the pill. I heard that you might have some break through bleeding on the shot.. If that were me I would take the pill.. Good Luck..

I had the depo shot about 10 years ago. I bled and had cramps every day for the first month. Not sure if it'll be worth it for you. You could take bc pills and then when it comes time to take the "sugar pills" and have your period, you just start the next pack. I tried that once on a vacation and didn't get my period.

I think Depo is a touch drastic. Wouldn't taking the pill continously for a few cycles be a better solution? Most doctors will allow you to safely take the pill, skipping the placebo's for a few cycles, to ensure you don't menstrate. Depo can have some nasty side effects...

Careful, you could end up on your period for a month or two. It affects diffent women differently. I got that shot after two of my kids. Both times it made me bleed for three months! I would recommend it.

Depo doesn't stop periods in all women. A lot of women continually bleed for or month or more.

I wouldn't reccomend the Depo shot. It never stopped my periods.

I do know of women that skipped the inert pills and started another pack of pills instead. If you have time to start them I would do that.

I wouldn't get it. For one, it would need to be a continuous thing to make them stop. One shot won't do it. Also, for some people, such as me, it makes you have a non stop period. I had one for four months straight before. So I wouldn't get it if I was you. There are also a lot of side effects from it, which is what forced me to go off of it.

Hello
I'm on the depo right now. If you have been on depo before and haven't had your period, it couldn't hurt you. I don't know if the doctors would give it to you with your tube being tied. thats somthing you would have to talk to your doctor about. I know there is a 50% chance you could have your period with the depo. well good luck and god bless.

I would think to ask your doctor for the pill. I know a few women that have done this during their vacation. for the same reasons you are asking. Have a great time.

I don't reccommend you get a depo shot if you are not using it for its sole purpose as birth control. With any birth control there are side effects. Depending on your body depo can cause excessive weight gain, changes in your hair texture, hormones, and if used over long periods of time you become high risk for osteroprosis. (I know I did not spell that right). I know you want to be period free but that is not a good reason to take the depo shot and I don't even know if your doctor would prescribe it just for those reasons. Now if you are concerned that you might get pregnant even though your tubes were tied,(because that has happened but it is rare) then I would suggest the depo shot because it is very effective. Also if you do get the depo shot and it stops your periods, when it is time to get another shot you might be on your period nonstop until you get the next shop or until eventually your body adapts again to not being on the shot, which could be a couple of months or so. Can you imagine spotting and having a period for an entire month? It could happen. I would discuss it with your doctor. If they do not see the harm in it, then go for it. But those are just some things that could happen.
