Vacation, Dogs and Flea Collars

My dogs are going to be staying with a person who lives in the middle of nowhere and has a dog door so they are going to be outside quite a bit more than average. My dogs get monthly flea treatment. Does anyone know if it is okay to put flea/tick collars on them for the week that we will be gone? Lots of ticks in the area.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

They are due to get their Frontline about a week prior to our vacation so I'll just go with that and forego the collars. Thanks.

If your dogs get monthly flea treatments, they do not need a collar. And I honestly don't suggest using one....too many awful side effects and dead or brain damaged dogs and cats due to flea collars.

When we go camping, I give our dog a bath and flea treatment right before we go. We've never had a problem with bringing any back home with us.

Flea collars are toxic to the animal and do nothing to the fleas. Don't waste your money., Treat them with Frontline or Advantage.

I don't like flea collars.

I would give the treatment the week before we go and that's that.

Check with your vet too...based on knowing your dogs and hopefully where they are going - he/she can advise you on what's best for your dog!

have a great vacation!!

Just an FYI, if your dogs have not used "doggie doors" before, your friends may need to be prepared to physically let your dogs out for potty time. Sometimes just getting dogs to eat or go potty when they are in a strange location (& especially without mommy!) can be difficult, much less expecting them to figure out how to navigate a trap door.

If they've visited before & are comfortable with the doors, or you have the doors yourself, then disregard.

Regarding your question, I've never had to treat my dogs for flea/tick before (knock on wood) but considering the health risks that can be posed from the flea/tick treatments to begin with, I would recommend staying with your regular protocol. Check with your vet about whether or not you should do something proactive or retroactive regarding ticks, if your normal treatment does not cover that. Have a good vacation! T. =-)
