My newborn was just hospitalized for a UTI at 8 days old. He is home now...the docs are recommending a VCUG....I am concerned about radiation with this test....is it premature to order such a test with only one infection...his UTI also occurred following his circumsicion....Has anyone heard of a circ causing a UTI...has this happend to anyone else...?? I am worried about my son, but also dont want to expose him to radiation unless necessary....

What can I do next?

My son had a VCUG at a week old. He then required surgery at 4 weeks and 12 months. The VCUG found the problem.

My son isn't circumcised.

I have never heard of a circ causing a UTI. It is really rare for boys to get UTI's which is why your doc wants the VCUG done. The radiation is minimal on this. My son had 2 or 3 VCUG's and several other x-rays, sonograms, testing done at birth and beyond. No side effects or issues from them. You really do need to get the test done as there are some things that will cause boys to have UTI's. Good luck

while we didn't have this done, my girlfriend did...her son was uncircumcised and ended up getting circumcised after they did the "look see" in his bladder.

the UTI isn't about the circumcision. At this stage in his life - his urethra may not be fully developed or has a blockage that is causing the urine to back up and not empty him bladder completely. If UTIs continue - they can lead to kidney infections - which are much worse...

The radiation is minimal. Have the procedure done so they can find out what's going on!!

GOOD LUCK!

My daughter had a UTI at 16 months and we got a VCUG at that point and she was diagnosed with vesicouretural reflux on one side. She participated in the RIVUR study at Johns Hopkins for kids with VUR. She was on medicine (not sure if real or placebo) for two years and had another VCUG at the end of the study. She stil has the VUR but has never had another UTI. Our pediatrician just told us at a recent well visit that the American Academy of Pediatrics just released (September 2011) new guidelines for managing and interventions for UTIs. I'd recommend reading the new recommendations. It used to be that a VCUG was recommended after the first UTI but I am pretty sure that has changed. Also, talk to the doctor who is suggesting the VCUG to find out what their plan is once they have the results of the test and that will help you make your decision. Good Luck!

The UTI would have happened regardless. There's a problem that needs to be corrected. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'd make sure that whoever performs the VCUG has lots of experience doing it, and I'd also want a second opinion if you can wait for one.

Good luck,
Dawn

The UTI and circumcision sound unrelated. I would go for the test just to be sure and the radiation is very low ---they are looking out for your son's best interest. I hope he feels better soon!
