My 5 year old daughter has been treated twice unsuccessfully for a UTI with antibiotics. We have provided the lab with yet another urine sample and currently wait for the results.

Has anyone tried a product called D-Mannose on a child of this age? If so, was it successful or not? I an afraid to give her another round of antibiotics as I know her immune system is just getting weaker and weaker.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I hope that the doctor has been having you give her probiotics as well. Go to Whole Foods, Sprouts, Henrys, and talk with the person in the nutrition department and let them know what you need, a good probiotic for a 5-y-o who has been on repeated rounds of antibiotics.

Is she taking bubble baths as these can cause them if there is a lot of 'junk' in them such as sodium laurel sulfates, dyes, perfumes.

Reduce the amount of sugars in her diet and IF she can swallow pills you might want to consider cranberry extract. Once again, speak with the person in the health food store.

Her ph is out of balance probably and you need to get it back into working order and wiping out the immune system is not one way to do that. I would look into Vitamin D3 supplementation / drops are available, reducing acidic foods (less sugar, red meat) and increasing alkaline foods (more vegetables).

Regarding D-Mannose, never heard of it and when I look it up, I am completely bewildered as to why a doctor would prescribe it so do share when you find out :o)

I've used D-Mannose on my 3 yr old and it worked. I use it myself for UTI's, and have had great success. Good luck!

Is she drinking a LOT of cranberry juice? It is really good for UTIs and may help her as well.

I don't know about D-Mannose in particular - it is a simple sugar and I find it odd that a single-ingredient product would be helpful in treating a UTI. I don't see that the company is a member of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, which is a watchdog group working to increase the standards in the nutrition industry.

Despite the proliferation of products in the wellness industry, most reputable authorities do not recommend that consumers try to pick out their own vitamins in isolation. That's not how nature intended us to get our vitamins and minerals. I know that supermarkets and health food stores make a fortune overselling bottles of Vitamins X Y and Z but it's all about the money and not about health. 80% of the US population takes supplements of some kind, yet we have a crisis in preventable but devastating diseases - so not all supplements are the same!

I think you are on the right track, however, in identifying the issues with her immune system. I think you might do better to use a comprehensive supplement designed for children that will support the immune system and help to eliminate these infections as well as help prevent other things. There is a great supplement available, developed by the food scientist behind ProSoBee infant formula and who also served as a consultant to Weight Watchers when they developed their food line. It's made in the US under strict conditions, and the company has been cited many times by many authorities as well-run, honest, ethical and a standard bearer in the nutrition field. It is available through trained distributors who provide great follow-up and customer service. You can also talk to others who have had results with UTIs in kids. There's a 30 day money-back guarantee too. If you are interested in learning more, let me know! Happy to help.
