I have tried the nastatin that the Doctor perscribed and that doesn't seem to help so I picked up some gentian violet and now I am unsure on how to apply it. Should this be deluted then applied with a cotton swab or just applied with a swab?
Any advise would be helpful.

What can I do next?

I've used it with a cotton swab. I get some onto aluminum and then dab the swap and apply. I wear a pantyline and it still seems to bleed over onto the sides, so don't use it with any great expensive undies. Good luck!!!

Hi A., I used Gentian violet a few months ago and it worked great! Put a little on a Q-tip and let your son suck on it before nursing. After you're done, swab some on yourself, just to make sure. There's no need to dilute it. Be prepared, though- it will look very dark in his mouth and will definitely stain! Also, I used it for four days before the pain really started to disappear. Good luck!

I too used Gentian Violet a couple of months ago after the Nystatin worked, but it came right back. I just dipped the cotton swab in the bottle and touched it in her mouth a couple of times. It tastes awful if you try it, so the babies don't like it either. Do that for about 3 days 1-2 times a day and it should be over. Put it on your nipples too if you are breastfeeding. It takes a couple of days for the purple to go away. Also, make sure you and baby are not wearing anything that you mind getting stained. It is VERY MESSY but it works really well from my own experience. I highly recommend it! Don't forget to take pictures, for laughs later! :) We also used Probiotics that I got at the health food store for both of us 3 X a day and still take them. Good luck!

The easiest way to do it is to strip down to the waist, cover your bed or wherever with an old sheet, and paint your nipples with the stuff, then let baby nurse. The GV will transfer to the baby's mouth; you don't have to swab him at all. Make sure to do both breasts, even if you only have symptoms on one side. Also boil all the pacifiers, artificial nipples, and teethers. Repeat for 4-5 days. I had to do this with all 3 of my kids at one time or another. I found the GV provided almost instant relief. Your baby's mouth will look dark purple for a few days. Have lots of bibs handy for him and use nursing pads in your bra, because the stuff stains. If you google Kellymom or Jack Newman and Gentian Violet, you will find a whole tip sheet on how to use it.

im assuming your nursing? actually both my kids, one bottle fed and the other breastfed both got thrush. i luckily had no symptoms with my nursing daughter but think i caught it quite early. i applied it directly to my nipples once a day, and let her nurse. her mouth was purple, and so was i, its definately a site, lol.

anyway, what ended up happening was my daughter was given diflucan which cleared the yeast right up, but i was using the gentian violet for me for fear i would transmit it back to her. i didnt realize until after, that i could have used it to treat both of us at the same time without using the diflucan. but if you happen to have it come back again, i would def treat the baby with diflucan. thats what got rid of it for the bottle fed one as well.

also, boil everything the baby uses, and make sure to even wash toys he may suck on. def limit your sugar, maybe take acidolpholus(sp?) and i have heard many recommend grapefruit seed extract. good luck

I didn't put it on baby's mouth at all, it got on there when she nursed from my nipples.

Also you must cut sugar out of your diet (and baby's too if they're eating solid food) for at least 2 weeks and I would strongly recommend taking acidolpholus tablets until this all clears up.

Hi A.,

I see you've got lots of great advice about the Gentian Violet. I used it with one of my children and found that it is so potent that it literally ate holes in my skin (I'm a very light skinned blonde). So if you are light too, you might think twice about using it. I have since used tea tree oil for all breast health issues and have had no problems with it, and it works great! I feel for you. Thrush is very painful.

Hi A.,
I used the Gentian Violet also b/c I didn't want to use the prescription drug. It did work but it is VERY messy. Put something down on your countertop b/c it stains. Do not dilute it either. Just use a new clean cotton swab for each application, don't keep putting the same cotton swab in the bottle and applying it. Cover the entire areola. Last, do your baby's mouth. Google that one or call the pharmacy or health food store where you got it b/c I honestly don't remember if it was just her lips or inside her mouth that I had to do it. Then we stayed in for a few days b/c her lips were purple. I know it sounds horrible, but it works and to me worth the effort instead of taking prescription drugs. Good luck :)
