If you feel that your doctor is not doing enough, you still have options. Ask him/her if there is more they can do and demand if necessary. You can also still switch doctors. It's not too late for that.
Good luck.
HI! I am 28 wks pregnant and have been labeled with severe anemia. My blood count is 7 out of 12 and this has been expressed to me by my doctors that this is not good. After I delievered my first child (via c-section)my blood count was 6 out of 12 and they did an immediate blood transfusion (not because of blood loss but because of the anemia they said) Okay so here is my problem I do not feel my doctors are handling my situation appropiatley, I am sleeping 12 hour nights, napping when my son naps (2-3 hrs), my heart beats very fast, I am dizzy, my ears feel like they are popped all the time. My doctor knows all this, I actually fainted at my son's halloween party on Friday and was taken to the hospital, checked into the labor and delivery unit and never once saw a DR. I was hooked up to a heart monitor and so was the baby for about four hours and then the NURSE sent me home. I still feel exactly the same all the time and I have a two year to take of, my mom and my husband are helping as much as they can but they both work during the day. Ultimately I think I need a blood transfusion now so I can feel better and go into this delivery feeling confident about my health and they baby's. Should I get a second opinion from another OBGYN practice? I hope this wasnt confusing. Thanks

Hello A.. I would get a second oppinion from a different 'clinic'. Also, the next time you are in the hospital and a Nurse discharges you without you ever seeing a Dr, REFUSE...tell him or her you ARE NOT going anywhere until you see a Dr, any Dr, any field. Nurses in the L&D in a Hospital have standard orders they can follow that do not need a Dr conscent. But you can stand up to them and demand propper care. Best of Luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
You should really be followed more closely! With a hgb that low the baby could not be getting the nurtients it needs also. Have they ever looked into WHY you are so anemic? I'd go elsewhere, such a bigger institution such as MetroHealth and get a second opinion.
Has your doctor put you on iron supplements for your anemia? Have you mentioned the idea of having a blood transfusion now to your doctor? I have no idea if that is something they would consider or not, but perhaps discussing it with your doctor would help you understand your options and the reasoning behind his opinion.
I had a blood transfusion after the birth of my daughter too. I also was anemic during the pregnancy. However, the iron supplements during the pregnancy really helped. I noticed a difference in my energy level, etc. almost immediately.
I'd suggest having a talk with your doctor about your concerns and if you are still unsure of how things are being handled, you can always get a second opinion.
A.,
this is totally a recommendation. Here is what I would do if I did not think the doctor was doing as I thought. I would call them CONSTANTLY!!!! I would just keep on their case. I know there is a lot of patients but with your past history I would just keep on them, telling over and over the you don't feel good and you sleep all the time, make them understand that this is not easy for you. My doctors always told me to call even if I knew the answer to my questions, they always said to call when I didn't feel well just so they would be aware of it. Anyway I hope this helps.
My sympathies to you - - it is never fun to have any "complications" in pregnancy!
Check out the article below - it may not contain any new information for you, but it's worth a shot. If you are still uncomfortable with the doctor's approach, it's never a bad thing to get a second opinion - - sometimes this can even be from a different doctor in the same practice.

I am a clinical specialist calling on all the OBGYN's in the greater Cleveland area. There are so many good ones out there and of course, a few bad ones too. I would first talk very openly with your doctor (not the so called nurse or medical assistant, but the DOCTOR) and address your concern. If they do not seemed phased or rather seemed bothered by your concerns, I would switch doctors. So many doctors just don't get it. They may be great medically speaking, but are human too and to error is human. There is nothing wrong with a second opinion.
Get to another OBGYN, it's a doctor's job to give second opinions. I was anemic and on high doses of iron during my 2nd pregnancy.
A second opionion is perfectly normal. It's not only your health that is at stake but also that of your baby's.
I don't know anything about anemia, but it sounds like you should get another opinion ASAP.
YES! Second Opinion....remember they work for YOU, fire that doc! Always trust your instincts.
If you are not comfortable with the care you are receiving, find another OBGYN. I had really high blood pressure when I was pregnant and I didn't think my docs were doing enough. I didn't seek a second opinion and I wish I would have. Thank goodness both my daughter and I are fine, but I was a little touch and go there for awhile. I was at severe risk for stroke and my doctor NEVER mentioned that I needed to stay off my feet. The nurses in L&D were absolutely appalled at the care I had received. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with seeking a second opinion.
